Donations to Waiteville Community Center for
Attic Insulation

The attic in the Waiteville Community Center does not have insulation. The historic Waiteville School was built in 1950 without attic insulation. In 1975 the building became Waiteville Community Center. In all the upgrades over the years, attic insulation was not added, resulting in heat loss in the winter months and difficulty cooling the building in summer. A recent estimate to install insulation is $8,985.00. In May 2025, Walter (Buster) Beane (who grew up in Waiteville), and his daughter Velleda Beane Dunbar, and her husband Ronald Dunbar (who own the former Depot and Store in Waiteville), contributed $1,000 toward attic insulation. In September 2025, Mrs. Dunbar notified Treasurer Shelby Jennings that they would donate $2,000 more if the WCC could obtain a match of at least $2,000. Matthew Alley and his wife Allison contributed $2,996 for the attic insulation on October 28, 2025. Matthew spent time during his youth in Waiteville with his grandparents Frances and Harold McDaniel and is the son of Board Member Janet McDaniel. On November 1, 2025 Velleda, Ronald, and Buster donated another $2,000 as promised in their invitation for the match. The total raised is $5,995.75. If you would like to contribute, contact Shelby Jennings, Treasurer, at [email protected]. Thank you for your support.

Waiteville Community Center Generator Training
On Sunday afternoon, November 2, 2025, Waiteville Community Center (WCC) Board Members, their spouses, and community members were trained for operational procedures of the standby generator that will provide electricity to the entire building during power outages. Dave Weakley, Vice President, led hooking up the generator to the building with help from Tinker Hale and Bruce Blaylock. This is an important step in establishing an Emergency Warming Center for the Waiteville Valley during extended power outages. Richard Miller, Director of Emergency Services for Monroe County, has been notified that the generator is now operational. He will work with Jeremy Meadows, County Clerk, Monroe County Commissioners, and the Red Cross to finalize plans for the WCC becoming an Emergency Warming Center and a Community “field command post” for the Incident Command Emergency Operations Center. The WCC is now in ready state upon declaration for “State of Emergency” from the Monroe County Commission at times of community need. By the Commission’s declaration, it opens doors to final support during emergency events. At the time of this article, the American Red Cross, and the Office of Emergency Management for Monroe County are in agreement that the WCC is in ready state for needs. “We are open for business.”
