We were privileged to honor a father and son duo Quilts of Valor on Thursday, April 23rd, in Wahpeton.
Warren P entered the US Army in 1951. This was during the Korean War. After passing the physical exam he got on a train heading to Fort Riley, Kansas, where his basic training was to learn how to use heavy weapons such as machine guns, bazookas, and mortars. After his training he was sent to Big Delta, Alaska where he was stationed for 2 years. At that time Alaska wasn’t a state so he was able to say he served overseas.
He became a Chaplain’s assistant with duties of driving the Chaplain and preparing the setup for church services.
He also had the privilege of escorting actress and singer Ann Blith around their camp when she came to Big Delta to entertain the troops…and he has pictures to prove it!
Warren was honorably discharged in 1953. He is a lifetime member of the International War Veteran’s Alliance, a 60-year member of the American Legion, and a 50-year member of the AmVets. He was privileged to have been on an Honor Flight to Washington DC.
Welcome home Warren, we thank you for your service and sacrifice in defending our country.

Red River Quilters had the privilege of awarding a QOV at the Military Appreciation Night before the Redhawks game in Fargo.

---------

Darwin served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He enlisted in 1963 and was honorably discharged as a Specialist E4 in 1966.

Darwin entered the Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, on the historic and tragic day of President John F. Kennedy assassination.

He then served at Fort Huachuca located at Sierra Vista, Arizona. Fort Huachuca's primary function was for Army Intelligence and Communications. While there Darwin cooked for MPs and prisoners.

From Fort Huachuca, Darwin moved to the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, a desert training and testing facility for various military equipment and material, including drones used for surveillance. Drones looked much different in the 1960's than they do today!

For two years, Darwin served in Okinawa, Japan. He served as a cook for the 7th Psychological Operations Group which was activated in Okinawa in 1965. This group provided psychological operations support to major commanders throughout the Pacific Command; including radio broadcasting, leaflet disseminations, loudspeaker operations, printing and propaganda evaluation.

Darwin earned an Expert Rifle Badge and the Good Conduct Ribbon for demonstrating exemplary conduct, efficiency and fidelity.

Darwin remembers the Honor Flight of 2022 out of Fargo as an extremely cherished memory of his military service.

Darwin, may this Quilt of Valor provide you with comfort and healing as a small token of our immense gratitude for your dedicated service and sacrifice.
