ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS: We recently became aware of a concerning new app called Saturn. This app lets students share their school schedules and connect with others in their classes. However, it poses major safety risks. Anyone can join using phone numbers, Snapchat, or emails, potentially jeopardizing student privacy. We are taking all of the necessary steps to ensure this app is blocked on our network and devices. But please talk to your students about the importance of keeping personal information private. Thank you for your support!

HERITAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT ARRESTED AFTER BRINGING UNLOADED GUN TO SCHOOL

A student at Heritage Middle School has been charged with possession of a weapon on school property after he brought a handgun with no magazine to school and showed another student.

The 13-year-old Deltona boy was arrested Tuesday afternoon after a parent of the witness student learned of the Monday incident and reported it.

In an interview with the witness, he told a deputy that during 3rd period class, the defendant asked him if he wanted to see something cool, then reached into his backpack and showed him the handgun.

The boy told deputies he brought the gun to school Monday because he was being bullied, but he had no intentions of hurting anyone. He said he got the gun from his parents’ bedroom closet and removed the magazine from it for safety.

The parents told deputies they always store the gun in a locked bedroom closet, but it must have been inadvertently left unlocked in this case. The weapon was collected as evidence along with another handgun stored in the same closet, and the 13-year-old defendant was transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

DELTONA MAN CHARGED WITH 17 COUNTS OF POSSESSING CHILD PO*******HY

A 27-year-old Deltona man has been arrested and charged with 17 counts of possessing pictures and videos of children portrayed in sexually explicit situations after detectives were alerted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Shawn Asbury (DOB 04/19/1995) of 3181 Courtland Blvd. was arrested Friday and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail on a warrant following an eight-month investigation.

Sheriff’s detectives began investigating in February after receiving a tip from the center, which notifies law enforcement agencies about possible sexual exploitation of children on the Internet.

Detectives executed a search warrant at Asbury’s home where they located multiple photos and videos depicting female children ranging in estimated age from 4 to 11 years old.

The investigation showed Asbury had downloaded at least 63 files and sent them out to other Internet users. At this time, there is no evidence of any local child victims.

Asbury is charged with 17 counts of possessing sexual performance of a child. He remains held at the jail on $500,000 bail.

Anyone who has information about this case or similar cases is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office’s Child Exploitation Unit at (386) 323-3574.
