The Spirit of the Comstock
Just imagine, long before Jeeps climbed these trails, the hills and mountains surrounding Virginia City were filled with miners, freight wagons, mule teams, and fortune seekers chasing silver during the Comstock boom of the late 1800s.
Virginia City became one of the richest mining towns in the American West after the discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859 — the first major silver discovery in U.S. history. Millions in silver and gold came out of these mountains, helping fuel Nevada’s statehood and the growth of San Francisco and the western frontier.
But life here was far from easy.
The trails through these mountains were steep, rocky, and dangerous. Freight teams hauled supplies, timber, and mining equipment through harsh weather, dust, heat, snow, and isolation. A broken wagon or injured horse could leave travelers stranded miles from help.
The very trails we will travel once carried the lifeblood of the Comstock.
As you drive through the Nevada high desert, imagine what this country looked like more than 130 years ago.
