🌫️ Smoke Has Reached Hampton Roads

If you noticed a hazy sky across Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and the surrounding area today, you’re not imagining it.

The haze is smoke from the massive Canadian wildfires that has drifted into our region.

🔴 Hampton Roads is currently under a Code Red (Unhealthy) Air Quality Alert. This means the air may be unhealthy for everyone, especially during prolonged outdoor activities.

Health officials recommend:
• Limit time outdoors if possible.
• Avoid strenuous exercise outside.
• Keep windows and doors closed.
• Run an air purifier if you have one.

🐋 Rare North Atlantic Right Whale Spotted Off Virginia Beach

A juvenile North Atlantic right whale, one of the world’s rarest marine mammals, was recently spotted off the Virginia Beach coast.

With only about 380 individuals remaining, every sighting is significant. These whales are federally protected and are especially vulnerable to boat strikes because they spend much of their time near the surface.

If you’re heading out on the water:
• 👀 Keep a lookout for whales.
• 🚤 Slow down if you spot one.
• 🚫 Stay at least 500 yards (457 m) away — it’s required by federal law.

Rare sightings like this remind us how important it is to protect the incredible wildlife right here off our coast. 💙🐋

VIRGINIA BEACH | Flood protection update:
what changed this spring

Virginia Beach is ten years into The Ripple Effect, the citywide flood protection program voters approved in November 2021. On June 23, 2026, City Council got the second-quarter status report. Here is what matters for residents.

WHAT THE PROGRAM DOES
Drainage upgrades, pump stations, tide gates, and flood barriers across Virginia Beach. Public Works runs the projects. A citizen oversight board (FPBROB) tracks spending and progress.

MONEY
The city has secured $73 million in state and federal grants and loans so far. Staff plan to apply for another $44 million.

PROJECTS FINISHED SINCE LAST QUARTER
- Seatack Neighborhood Drainage Improvements — completed March 2026
- First Colonial Road and Oceana Boulevard Drainage Improvements — completed June 2026

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY NOW
- Eastern Shore Drive Bundle
- Eastern Shore Drive Roadway 1F

DESIGN MILESTONES REACHED
- Pungo Ferry Road Improvements — now at 60% design

VIRGINIA BEACH | Safety tool or $100 ticket machine?

Speed cameras are now showing up in Virginia Beach school zones, including the Great Neck / John B. Dey area.

The city says the goal is simple: slow drivers down and protect kids near schools. Fair enough. Nobody wants reckless drivers flying through a school zone.

But here is where the debate starts.

After a 30-day warning period, violations can lead to a $100 citation. The city says these tickets are zero-point infractions and do not go on your driving record.

So is this really about safety, or is Virginia Beach creating another automated ticket system that will quietly collect money from local drivers?

Supporters will say:
“If you don’t speed near schools, you have nothing to worry about.”

Critics will say:
“If it’s really about safety, why not add more crossing guards, better signs, flashing lights, or actual police presence?”

Virginia Beach has identified 14 school zones for speed cameras.

Author’s note: I drove through the listed school zones specifically to take a closer look. In my opinion, these areas really are busy, and speeding does appear to be an issue there.
