Michelle brings a wealth of experience and a heart for children and families. She has fostered more than 40 children, served as a CASA volunteer, and spent years leading healthcare programs that support children and families. We’re excited to welcome her and learn from her experience!

Seeking out a mentor takes strength.

Oftentimes, independence is seen as the ability to do everything on your own. But true strength is recognizing the value of someone who can walk alongside you, offer perspective, and help you grow.

Strong mentors don’t make decisions for you or try to fix every problem. They guide, challenge, encourage, and help you see possibilities you might not have seen on your own.

Wheels, meals, and big smiles! 🏍️

Last month, the local chapter of Christ Descendants Motorcycle Ministry paved the way for a fun evening at The Village. They provided a large portion of our dinner and gave the kids a chance to explore their bikes up close in the parking lot!

We love seeing our community come together in unexpected ways to support foster, adoptive, and kinship families. Thank you, Christ Descendents, for sharing your time, generosity, and passion with our Village families!

“What I have enjoyed about mentorship the most is … feeling part of a family and having someone there to always be by my side. Something that I have taken away from my relationship is that it is not all positive, but that you work through it and communicate your needs and listen for advice, but there’s always going to be somebody by your side … whether they’re supporting you emotionally, physically, or any other way you may need support. My relationship with my mentor has impacted the way I view myself because she helps me not only see myself through others’ eyes, but through God’s eyes. She helps me to stop putting myself down and reminds me that I am more than I can ever imagine. I am a vessel for God. I very much recommend this wonderful program. It has helped me have a sense of family and a sense of feeling loved by someone and it is an amazing feeling because a lot of us come into this program not having anyone so I hope that you can find comfort in this program as well.” -“D,” DGA mentee

We were honored to have members of the Wild Oak Haven team meet with Delegate Anne Ferrell Tata this week.

Delegate Tata has been a strong advocate in our community for child safety, youth aging out of care, and stronger support for children and families impacted by foster care.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect, share more about Wild Oak Haven, and learn from someone who is committed to serving this population across our community.

Last week, our team had the opportunity to attend the CAFO Summit (Christian Alliance for Orphans)—joining 2,500 people from more than 50 countries who are committed to caring for vulnerable children, families and young adults.

This year’s theme was “Less Branches. Better Fruit.” A reminder that pruning is necessary to be intentional, productive, and fruitful in the work God has called us to.

Our team came home with so much to process and carry forward—lessons on trauma and healing, identity, relationships, reconciliation, and what it looks like to love and support children, families, and young adults well.

One of our Young Adult Ambassadors, Bethany, was able to attend the Summit with our team and shared:

“I learned a lot about (the steps to) healing from trauma, identity within myself being someone who aged out of foster care, and not letting people label me. I also learned ways to resolve conflict in a work space.”

A few other takeaways our team is reflecting on and wanted to share with you:

🌿 “My job was not to heal my kids. My job was to love them and point them to the Healer.”

🌿 “The suffering itself was never the gift, but the God I met there was.”

🌿 “Pray twice what you talk about.”

🌿 “Defensiveness is no position to begin reconciliation.”

We’re thankful for the opportunity to invest in and equip our WOH leaders so that, together, we can continue growing in how we care for children, families, and young adults impacted by foster care.

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a mentor, this is a great time to take that next step.

Our next Don’t Go Alone New Mentor Training will be held Wednesday, October 7, from 5:30–8:30 p.m. at Gateway Church (5473 Virginia Beach Blvd.).

Don’t Go Alone is a Christ-centered mentorship program for aged out or at-risk young adults. Mentors provide encouragement, practical support, and a consistent relationship.

If you’ve felt the Lord nudging you toward mentorship, we’d love for you to join us. You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to be willing to walk alongside someone.

Our very own Relationship Manager, Dan, joined some incredible local leaders on the panel at Regent University’s Jeffersonian Series last week, bringing his perspective to an important conversation about foster care.

Opportunities like this matter. When local leaders, organizations, churches, and community members come together, we can share ideas, learn from one another, and work toward progress for children and families impacted by foster care.

One theme that really stood out throughout the conversation was the vital role of the Church in foster care—and we couldn’t agree more.

We’re grateful to be part of the conversation and even more grateful to be part of the work happening right here in our community. 🧡

This past week, we had the privilege of sharing about Wild Oak Haven at two women’s Bible studies at Trinity Church, and we’ve been so encouraged to see these women step into the mission with us.

Some are interested in becoming mentors. Others are using their gifts to bless families at The Village, fill our childcare rooms with games and crafts, and provide supplies for young adults entering our Don’t Go Alone mentorship program.

While not everyone is called to foster or adopt, we can all play a part in supporting those who are.

Maybe your small group can provide a meal at our next Village meeting.

Maybe you can mentor a young adult.

Maybe your family can encourage a local social worker.

Maybe your church can become a partner.

There are many wonderful organizations in our community showing up for children in foster care, foster and adoptive families, and young adults aging out of care. We’re grateful to be one small part of this good work that is happening right here in our community.

God has called Wild Oak Haven to come alongside others, fill the gaps where we can, and build relationships that remind people they don’t have to walk through this alone.

And we’ll keep showing up, because everyone deserves to belong. 🧡
