Formal letter to Old Dominion University expressing concern about its decision to host the Russian cultural group Ensemble Barynya.

We want to inform our community and friends that the Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads has sent a formal letter to expressing concern about its decision to host the Russian cultural group Ensemble Barynya on October 20, 2026.

Our letter emphasizes that, while we respect artistic expression and cultural exchange, it is difficult to separate Russian cultural representation from the broader context of Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine. For more than four years, Ukraine has endured the destruction of cultural heritage sites, museums, theaters, archives, schools, and churches, while countless Ukrainian artists, musicians, writers, and cultural leaders have been displaced, silenced, injured, or killed.
We respectfully asked the university to reconsider hosting this performance and instead consider providing a platform for Ukrainian artists and cultural representatives, including many talented individuals right here in our local community. We believe educational institutions have an opportunity to elevate voices from communities that are experiencing the direct consequences of war and aggression.

Our goal is not to promote division, but rather to advocate for awareness, accountability, and support for those whose culture and identity continue to be under attack.

We appreciate everyone in our community who continues to stand with Ukraine and support Ukrainian culture, history, and people during this difficult time.

Thank you for your continued support.

🇺🇦 Slava Ukraini!

Note: We have requested a response from Old Dominion University and will keep our community informed of any developments.

💙Heartfelt Thank You to Our Toy Drive Supporters💛

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported the Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads Toy Drive for Ukrainian orphaned and vulnerable children.

We recently received a beautiful report from our volunteer in Ukraine, @Ірина Заторська, who personally delivered the donated toys to the Lysohirska Residential School for Children with Special Needs and witnessed firsthand the joy they brought to the children.

Iryna shared these touching words:

"Yesterday was a very special visit to the Lysohirska Residential School for Children with Special Needs.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank the Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads and all the volunteers for the incredible warmth, care, and love you give to Ukrainian children.

It is especially meaningful to know that even from thousands of miles away, you have not forgotten children who have been deprived of parental care. You continue to find ways to support them, sending gifts, attention, and most importantly, the feeling that they are not alone.

To some, these are simply gifts. But to a child, they are moments of happiness, genuine smiles, and proof that someone remembers them and cares about them.

Thank you to every volunteer for your time, kindness, compassion, and generous heart. Thank you for standing with Ukraine and its children, even from afar.

Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads, thank you for your warmth, your support, and your love for our children.May all the goodness you give to others return to you a hundredfold."

Your generosity did far more than deliver toys. It delivered hope, comfort, and the reminder that these children are seen, valued, and loved.

Thank you to every donor, volunteer, and supporter who helped make this possible. Together, we are making a difference, one smile at a time.

We would also like to express special thanks to the local organizations and businesses that generously provided their premises as Toy Drive drop‑off locations:

• Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church
• London Bridge Greenhouses & Nursery
• Tidewater Ukrainian School
• Alencar Family Dentistry @

With gratitude,

Report from Ukraine by Iryna Kutsevol-Conwell: Your Support in Action 🫶🏻

The Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads (UCC) is grateful to share an update from our community volunteer, Iryna Kutsevol-Conwell, regarding the humanitarian assistance made possible through donations from our community.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, all funds raised for this initiative have been fully utilized to support Ukrainian veterans, wounded service members, displaced families, and vulnerable civilians.

💙Assistance for Wounded Soldiers in Cherkasy💛

A significant portion of the donated funds was used to provide essential supplies for wounded Ukrainian service members receiving treatment in hospitals in Cherkasy.

Volunteers purchased and delivered much-needed items, including:
T-shirts,
shorts,
sweatshirts, and underwear
Socks
Toothpaste and toothbrushes
Shaving foam and razors
Tea, coffee, snacks, and other comfort items.

The team was able to fully load a volunteer van several times with supplies for visits to wounded soldiers, ensuring that patients received both practical necessities and encouragement during their recovery.

💙Support for Communities in the Kherson Region💛

In response to a request from Pastor Serhii Vysochenko, who serves local residents and military personnel in the Kherson region, five high-capacity power banks were purchased and delivered.
These power banks provide a reliable source of power in areas where infrastructure continues to be affected by the ongoing war.

💙Food Assistance for Displaced and Low-Income Families💛

The remaining funds, approximately $150, helped cover the cost of food packages for 30 low-income individuals and internally displaced persons connected with the Word of Faith Church in Cherkasy.
The food packages included basic necessities such as:
Grains and cereals
Cooking oil
Canned foods
Meat products
Tea and other essential grocery items

These supplies provided meaningful support to families facing economic hardship and displacement.
Continuing Challenges

Iryna and her husband, Jonathan Matthew Conwell, continue to support vulnerable families and displaced individuals in Ukraine. Humanitarian needs remain significant as many communities face uncertainty regarding access to food, electricity, and other basic necessities.

The ongoing attacks on infrastructure and supply networks have increased concerns about shortages and difficult conditions for many Ukrainians. As winter approaches, assistance for affected families and communities remains critically important.

Thank You 🫶🏻

The Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to this fundraising effort.

Your generosity has provided tangible assistance to wounded soldiers, supported communities in frontline regions, and helped feed families in need.

Every donation makes a difference and demonstrates that the Ukrainian people are not alone. We need your help to continue supporting them.

💙💛

Thank You for Supporting Our Mission 🇺🇦

The Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads is proud to share that, thanks to the generosity and support of our community, we have purchased anti-drone protective equipment capable of detecting drones.

This critical equipment has been sent to the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine, where it will help enhance safety and protection for those living and working in an area heavily affected by the war.

As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we are deeply grateful to every donor, volunteer, and supporter who makes this mission possible. Your contributions allow us to provide meaningful assistance to Ukraine and support communities facing extraordinary challenges.

Together, we are making a difference. Thank you for standing with Ukraine and supporting the mission of the Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads.
