The other side of advocacy looks like THIS. ๐Ÿ’œ

First day of school smiles. Happy students. Fresh starts. New possibilities.

We spend so much time fighting for services, access, inclusion, support, and our children's right to have what they need to thrive. Sometimes advocacy can feel heavy.

But then you get to see the other side of the advocacyโ€”students smiling, excited, confident, and ready for a new school year.

And THAT is the reward. ๐Ÿ’œ

This is why we advocate. This is why we keep showing up.

Happy First Day of School! ๐Ÿ“šโœ๏ธ๐ŸŽ’

Research can identify patterns.

Families help us understand what those patterns feel like in real life.

Behind every discussion about discipline, disability identification, missed services, or family engagement is a child navigating a systemโ€”and an adult working to make that system respond.

At Advocating While Black Summitโ„ข, research will not be separated from lived experience.

This two-day experience centered on Healing. Advocacy. Action. will help Virginia parents, caregivers, educators, and school administrators connect information with practical change.

You will leave with stronger questions, clearer strategies, useful tools, greater confidence, and community.

Data should do more than describe inequity.

๐Ÿ“š OUR WORK IS IN THE IOWA LAW REVIEW. And yes, weโ€™re bragging a little. Because this matters.

A while back, I sat down with Professor LaToya Baldwin Clark and talked about what it means to do this work as a Black mother, a professional special education advocate, and someone who knows firsthand that race does not disappear when a child walks into an IEP meeting.

That conversation, along with interviews with other Black advocates, helped inform her newly published Iowa Law Review article:
โ€œCultivating Motherwork: Gender, Race, and Rights in Special Education Advocacy.โ€
https://ilr.law.uiowa.edu/volume-111-issue-5/cultivating-motherwork-gender-race-and-rights-special-education-advocacy

And WHEW. Seeing this work documented in legal scholarship hits different.

The article examines something Black families already know in our bones: having resources, education, or professional status does not magically protect Black children with disabilities from inappropriate placements, harsh discipline, misdiagnosis, or being underestimated.

And it recognizes the Black mothers who took what we learned fighting for our own children and turned it into professional advocacy for other families.

That is Advocating While Blackโ„ข ... Weโ€™ve been saying it: you cannot talk honestly about disability without talking about race.
You cannot understand special education advocacy without understanding what Black parents have to navigate just to be heard.
And you cannot build better systems while ignoring the knowledge Black mothers have developed from protecting our children inside them.
Now that work is part of the scholarship.
Iโ€™m deeply grateful to Professor Baldwin Clark for listening to our experiences, taking this work seriously, and giving language and scholarly attention to labor that is too often invisible.
The work Black mothers have been doing at IEP tables, kitchen tables, complaint hearings, and school district offices is knowledge.
It belongs in the research.
It belongs in the law.
It belongs in the conversation about what happens next.
And Advocating 4 Kids was in the room. ๐Ÿ’›

Before a school meeting begins, everyone enters with a story.

Parents may enter carrying worry, previous harm, unanswered questions, and the responsibility of protecting their child.

Educators may enter carrying limited resources, competing expectations, and pressure to find solutions.

School administrators may enter carrying policy responsibilities and system-level challenges.

Understanding does not remove accountability.

It makes honest partnership possible.

Advocating While Black Summitโ„ข is a two-day experience centered on Healing. Advocacy. Action.

Virginia attendees will gain practical tools, advocacy strategies, greater confidence, and a community committed to better outcomes for Black neurodivergent children.

What do you wish others understood before a school meeting begins?
