Rabbit Fact of the day!! Rabbits can hear sounds up to two miles away. Their ears are finely tuned to detect sounds from far away, and they can hear high-frequency sounds that humans can't. Sometimes a seemingly healthy rabbit that is in rehab care suddenly dies with no signs of illness, we associate many of these deaths to Capture Myopathy. Capture Myopathy clinical signs may develop hours, days, or up to two months following capture. Early clinical signs include elevated respiratory rate, heart rate, and body temperature. This is one of the reasons we tell people to please DO NOT handle and try to snuggle, or let children hold baby bunnies. It is imperative to get them to rehab as soon as possible without being kept or handled for a long period.

ATTENTION !!!!! With this winter storm heading our way please be on the lookout for baby bunnies and baby squirrels.... Right now is the time of year that they are being born. Please if you find a baby DO NOT FEED IT ANYTHING!!!!! This is imperative for its survival. Just keep it warm and in a shoe box or container with ventilation holes in it away from household pets and noise until you can get it to a rehabber.

Reaching out to all of our friends on here. This year has been the most horrific year for us. Losing some of our friends and fellow rehabbers in NC and seeing the devastation there in a beautiful place we visited just last May is heartbreaking. We have sent formula and supplies as much as we could send, knowing this is just a drop in the bucket towards helping. We however need help ourselves. This year we suffered thousands of dollars in damage to our wildlife room from a storm here. We are getting it bac to normal but it has taken time and money, money that we didn't have. Lawrence graciously said we just have to cut back on personal items and do what we can to keep things going here. I have to say it has been a challenge, but we have survived. This year alone we have taken in over 1,600 babies and they are still coming in....I know many of you have donated to the hurricane victims and have done more than your share to help, but if you can find it in your hearts to reach a little deeper we need help as well. We need to buy supplies, medications, formulas and replenish what we lost in the flood here. ANYTHING WILL HELP!!! Please donate IF YOU CAN

Received a call from a sweet friend Katie Morris earlier. She had a baby squirrel fall through the ceiling this morning at the ODU Kaufman Bldg. My sweet granddaughter Paige is on her way after class to pick up the baby and bring it in. Little one has a bloody nose but hopefully nothing serious wrong.

A Second Chance for ALL Living Creatures

We are a non-profit organization that takes in hundreds of injured and orphaned wild animals each year. Our goal is to nurture them, raise them, and release healthy animals back into the wild. Our team of rehabbers consists of 8 individuals that dedicate their time and resources to caring for these animals. The Lord spoke to me once after I had heart surgery and said to me... “I have given you a second chance” Shortly after that I started Second Chance Wildlife. Every living creature deserves a second chance. Please donate to support our cause an to help our ecosystem... every animal plays their individual role in preserving our earth. Thank you, Connie Hiebert
