Today we remember the ultimate sacrifice by Special Constable Malachi Beasley, who is the first known law enforcement to die in the line of duty in what is now the City of Virginia Beach.

Princess Anne County, Virginia
End of Watch: Saturday, September 24, 1898
Special Constable Beasley was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man wanted for stealing a handgun earlier in the day.

The victim of the theft made a complaint to the local justice of the peace, who swore in Mr. Beasley as a special constable in order to arrest the suspect.

Special Constable Beasley located the suspect on North Landing Road, about a one mile from the Princess Anne County Courthouse. When the constable informed the suspect he was under arrest, the man immediately pulled out the pistol and opened fire, striking Constable Beasley in the neck and head, killing him.

The suspect fled the scene but was later arrested by a posse. The man was transferred to the Norfolk City Jail for his own safety. On October 3, 1898, a grand jury recommended his case be tried, and on December 6, 1898, he was sentenced to death by hanging.

Special Constable Beasley had only been sworn in hours before he was murdered. He was survived by his wife and three children.

Today we remember & honor Auxiliary Officer George Starr, who was struck by a car and killed at 0400 hours while he tried to assist people who were injured in a serious traffic accident on the Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway (now I-264) ½ mile east of Independence Blvd.

Officer Starr was on his way home when he stopped to help at an accident scene caused by an impaired driver. He was in uniform, but had only his private vehicle and was the only officer on the scene at the time. Shortly after he arrived, another impaired driver going above the speed limit crashed into the original scene, killing both Officer Starr and a civilian woman who had also stopped to help.

Officer Starr volunteered with the agency for only three months and was in the U.S. Navy, assigned to a helicopter squadron at Norfolk Naval Station. He was survived by his wife, parents and three siblings.

DONATION AMOUNT TO QUALIFY FOR A NO CUSSING SIGN HAS DROPPED!

As a nonprofit, the VB Police Foundation needs charitable donations to continue to fulfill our mission.

For a limited time, donors of $400 will receive a round “no cursing“ logo street sign and donors of $125 will receive a rectangular “no cursing“ sign that asked for certain behavior to be avoided. These are increasingly rare historical items that promoted positivity and decorum in the oceanfront area. THESE SIGNS ARE “ AS-IS” perfect for a garage, man cave, pool house, or local business ( or as a gift…Christmas is coming !). Don’t miss your chance to make a meaningful contribution to a worthy cause and receive, as an acknowledgment/thank you token, a unique piece of local history and spirit!

These “no cursing” signs were displayed at the Virginia Beach resort strip, beginning in the ‘90s and are the actual signs that were removed from display. EACH SIGN IS UNIQUE AND COMES “AS-IS” WITH ALL ITS IMPERFECTIONS THAT CAME FROM OVER TWO DECADES OF USE. It may be bent, discolored or faded, or may have various stickers on it courtesy of some free wheeling visitor to the oceanfront.

The sign shown in the photos are representative of the sign you would receive as a thank you token for your donation, but may not be the exact sign.
WE ARE NOT SELLING THESE SIZES. IN LIEU OF SOMETHING LIKE A BALL CAP OR T-SHIRT THAT YOU MIGHT RECEIVE FROM OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, FOR A LIMITED TIME WE ARE OPTING TO GIVE DONORS AT THE $400 AND $125 LEVELS A HISTORICAL STREET SIGN AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.

These signs are LIMITED!

IF INTERESTED, PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:

If interested in this donor token of appreciation, please send an email to [email protected] indicating your intended level of donation $400 or $125, along with your name and phone number. This donor offer is available on a first come basis, to be determined by the date and time indicated on your email when we receive it. If a sign is available based upon your “place in line“ we will contact you with instructions on how to make your donation, which must be done within 48 hours. All signs are personal pick up only, as shipping costs are outrageous. We will arrange with you for a meet and pick up of your sign.

Today we honor the memory and sacrifice of detective Michael Philips, who was shot and killed during an undercover drug buy on this day in 2008. This was a tragic and unforgettable day in the history of the Virginia Beach Police Department.

The Virginia Beach Police Foundation has and will continue working to ensure that Detective Philips and his sacrifice are never forgotten.

Detective Philips was a US Air Force veteran who had served during desert storm, and a six year veteran of the VBPD. He left behind his parents, a sidter, his wife and two sons to carry on his memory. May he continue to Rest in Peace. 💙

Today remember the tragic death and honor the memory of Special Police Officer Hezekiah Little was accidentally shot and killed by another officer as they attempted to arrest a soldier along the Seaview Beach Amusement Park boardwalk at approximately 8:45 pm pn August 2, 1953.

The soldier began to struggle with Officer Little and disarmed him. As the two continued to struggle the other officer fired two shots at the soldier, but struck Officer Little in the head, killing him. The soldier was arrested and charged with malicious assault and the officer who shot Officer Little was charged with manslaughter. Charges against the subject and the other officer were eventually dropped.

Officer Little had been appointed a special police officer for Princess Anne County to serve at Seaview Beach only five weeks earlier. Seaview Beach closed when segregation ended and was located along the shore of the Chesapeake Bay near the intersection of Shore Drive & Great Neck Road.

He was survived by his wife, daughter, two sons, parents, and 10 siblings. He was buried in Seatack Cemetery.
