Fifty years ago this month, a pack of Juicy Fruit gum became the first item to be scanned via barcode. The invention that made it possible is credited to a BSA alum.

As a Scout, Norman Woodland learned Morse code as one of the requirements to earn the rank of First Class. This laid the foundation for his invention of the barcode.

Woodland wondered if Morse code could be visually represented. He thought that instead of dots and dashes, thin and thick lines could be used. The result is what we now call the barcode.

Billions of products per day are scanned and tracked worldwide with the help of barcodes.

Almost 100 million BSA alums are doing great things every day in their communities.
