Surviving a brain aneurysm rupture is the start of a long journey — often involving multiple physical, emotional, social and financial challenges. This is the forgotten space where more support is needed to help survivors (re)discover their own power. Broken Crayons Still Color!

An acquired brain injury isn’t what we expected in our lives: it is a disruptor of life as we knew it. A stroke; a ruptured aneurysm; an accident… and suddenly life changes. “Lucky to be alive”. Yes. But not easy. Too many survivors struggle in silence and without access to the right support. This is brain injury month: a reminder that we all know someone who needs the support of another. Speak up; tell us your story. Reach out; Listen. Hear the story spoken in silence.

Our brains are central to everything we do, so they're worth taking care of. This Brain injury Awareness Month, share your story to help spread awareness and educate others: https://bit.ly/3lpL3HL

Great tips for taking care of emotional well-being after brain injury. One of our favorites: “ Try to focus on one thing at a time. It can be overwhelming to think about too many things at once. Instead of thinking about long to-do lists and possible scenarios, try to focus on one thing at a time.” Which one resonates with you the most?

The connection between brain injury and mental health is complex. Use these tips in your daily life to help take care of your mental health.

Survivors of brain injury often struggle to be seen, understood and accepted for the wholesome person they are. We aren’t here just to survive: maybe we made it through the shock and physical triage… and, yes, that is survival… but there is so much more to us and to LIFE. This day, right now, is a new chance in life and a new challenge in discovering how our wholesomeness includes our injury but isn’t defined by it. Some of us are still on emotional and physical training wheels trying to get through the day without despair.

So please don’t judge us: we are already vulnerable. Don’t tell us that we are just fine: our pain may not be visible but it is real. And please don’t talk down on us — we are slowly rising from the ashes, and it may take a while but We Are Powerful. Be patient for a little longer. Stay still. Allow yourself to see us as We are: broken, scared, brave, confused, lonesome, hopeful, kind, alive
— wishing to belong, to love and to be loved — in all of our wholesomeness. Healing is the gift of love. 🙏❤️

Toward the end, you'll find guidance for everyday habits (nutrition, exercise...)to help improve cognitive functioning. What has helped you the most in your healing and recovery after brain surgery?

Today is . Did you know that: up to 70% of people with a brain injury, suffer from sleep disorders?

Insomnia was also found to be a potential risk factor for a brain bleed from a ruptured brain aneurysm (AHA study, 11/2021), especially when coupled with other risk factors.

If you suffer from sleepless nights, here are a few things that could help:

1. Set a regular bed-time
2. Shut down your phone, TV, laptop
3. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and ni****ne
4. Enjoy exercise and fresh air daily
5. Limit nap-time to 20 mins.
6. Use simple meditation ( breathe !) to help calm your mind for the night.

Don’t forget to tell your doctor about your trouble sleeping at night or fatigue during the day! 🌜 💤 🛌

Getting out of the hospital after brain surgery, is a big milestone. It means that the medical crisis is over, and recovery can start. You are already a hero for fighting your way to this moment! Don’t be shy to ask for support, understanding and time to take in what just happened. Recovery is not just a physical process, it is an emotional journey. And it takes time.
Sending all of you healing energy, courage and love wherever you are on your journey. ❤️
