Get an inside look at the hands-on, learn-by-doing experience aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear. The 2026 Summer Sea Term updates are now live on the Cal Poly Maritime Academy website!

From Tahiti to Fiji to Honolulu, cadets are gaining valuable sea-going experience while continuing a proud tradition that spans decades.

⚓ UPDATE: Best Views for the TS Golden Bear Departure! ⚓

We have some exciting new details for the send-off on May 8! After scouting the best vantage points, we’ve identified an even better spot to catch all the action.

📍 NEW GATHERING SPOT: The greens along the Vallejo Ferry Terminal.

While the Mare Island side offers a great view of the bow, the Vallejo side is where you’ll see the tugs in action as they pull the ship out and turn her around. The ship will pivot right in front of the Vallejo Ferry Terminal before heading toward the Golden Gate Bridge.

Updated Morning Timeline:

5:30 AM: Pilots board the ship and the crew completes the final rounds of drills.

6:45 AM: I will be at the Vallejo Ferry Terminal greens with card-making supplies for your sailors.

7:00 AM (approx.): The Bear will pivot and officially depart the waterway.

The ship is expected to pass under the Golden Gate Bridge about an hour later.

Don't forget your flags, posters, and noisemakers! Let’s make sure our cadets hear us loud and clear from the shore as they begin their journey.

🚢 The 2026 Summer Sea Term Begins! 🌊

The Training Ship Golden Bear is slated to depart for her summer voyage on May 8!

Here is everything you need to know for the send-off:

Timing: Pilots will board the ship at 5:30 AM, and shortly after, the Bear will begin its departure towards San Francisco.

The Route: Watch as the ship sails under the Golden Gate Bridge on its way down to San Diego!

Where to Watch: This year, we are gathering at Mare Island to wave goodbye. The ship will be perfectly visible from the Mare Island Ferry Terminal.

Special Activity: Cal Poly Maritime Family Programs will be there and will provide supplies to make cards for your sailors! We will collect these and send them out mid-cruise to give our cadets a boost of home while they are away.

What to Bring: 📢 Noise makers 🪧 Posters & banners 🚩 Flags!

Let’s join at the waterfront to give our students an incredible send-off. We can't wait to see the community come together for this maritime tradition!

They led workshops, connected with peers nationwide and explored strategies to support student success. Yesterday, Cal Poly Maritime Academy had the honor of welcoming Grand Master Navigator Sesario Sewralur and Master Navigators Jun Coleman, Cecilio Raiukiulipiy, and Mario Benito from the Northern Mariana Islands. 🌊✨

They shared their deep knowledge of star-based navigation, canoe building, apprenticeship, and ceremonial initiation, traditions that have sustained ocean voyaging for generations.

At noon, a special waterfront canoe blessing brought students, staff, and guests together to experience this powerful cultural tradition firsthand right on campus!
