A new subprogram of the Firefighter Youth Academy has started this year in Vallejo, the Junior Wildland Firefighters. This program is focused on providing opportunities for a small portion of our cadets to explore the natural world through hiking and learn more about the various emergency response careers in the wilderness. Their first hike was last Sunday at Benicia State Park. These cadets woke up early on a Sunday morning to go experience nature and stay active. We are excited for what is to come of this new program!

Firefighter Youth Academy cadets from both Vallejo and Contra Costa went to the Oakland Museum of California recently. OMCA has a special exhibition dedicated to the ways fire is used culturally and environmentally by the indigenous peoples of California. Cadets learned about the importance of cultural burns at the exhibit and a panel discussion. Additionally cadets explored OMCA. Exposure to museums and different cultures is important and we are so thankful for the ability to attend!
