New relief fund created to support those impacted by Cherry County fires
VALENTINE, Neb. — A new fund has been established to provide financial support to people affected by recent wildfires in the Valentine and Kilgore areas.
The Sandhills Area Foundation announced March 20 it has entered into a pass-through agreement with John and Mark Johnson to administer the Anderson Bridge Fire Relief Fund. The fund is designed to assist individuals, families and organizations impacted by the Anderson Bridge Fire, as well as other fires across the region.
Funding will be distributed with priority given to those directly affected by the Anderson Bridge Fire in Cherry County. Secondary consideration will go to others impacted by fires within the county, while additional support may extend to neighboring areas affected by the mid-March wildfires.
In addition to helping residents, the fund will also provide assistance to local fire departments and emergency responders who aided in the response.
“The generosity and community spirit of John and Mark Johnson reflect the best of the Sandhills,” said Kim Marlatt, president of the Sandhills Area Foundation. “Through this partnership, we are ensuring that help reaches those who need it most as they begin rebuilding their homes and communities.”
Donations to the Anderson Bridge Fire Relief Fund can be made through the Sandhills Area Foundation’s website or by mailing a check to Sandhills Area Foundation, 103 N. Cherry St., Valentine, NE 69201. Donors are asked to note “Fire relief” in the memo line.

New scoreboard coming to Valentine Baseball Complex

VALENTINE, Neb. – A new scoreboard is on the way to the Valentine Baseball Complex.
During Thursday’s meeting, the Valentine City Council voted to contribute $10,000 toward the project, which is on city-owned property. The American Legion has already raised $12,500 and has ordered the board.
American Legion Post 90 Commander Monty Krueger said the replacement is necessary because the current scoreboard at Legion Field, purchased in 1995, flickers on and off. He said repairing it would cost within about $2,500 of buying a new one. Longtime Legion coach Kent Lopez added that the driver has been replaced twice, and the board caused problems during last year’s tournament.
Valentine Mayor Kyle Arganbright said he hopes the old scoreboard can be repurposed for the youth field.
“The youth would like to see a scoreboard, so we could try to use the old one there,” Arganbright said. “A shelter on the dugouts would also be nice because it’s really hot in July.”
Krueger expects the total cost of the project to be around $24,500.
