Intellectual disability professionals sometimes take ordinary human choice and wrap it in serviceland crap. For example:

"She chose not to attend" becomes "She was non-compliant with the program."

"He wanted to spend time alone" becomes "He isolated himself from activities."

"She changed her mind" becomes "She was inconsistent in her decision-making."

"He didn't want help" becomes "He refused support."

"She disagreed" becomes "She was resistant to intervention."

"He preferred to stay home" becomes "He declined participation in community inclusion opportunities."

A choice isn't a behaviour problem just because someone with a disability made it.
..

ID: Title reads: Remember: People with intellectual disabilities have the right to say no. Image shows: A professional-looking person is talking to a support staff person. The speech bubble reads: “It’s recorded that he refused.” Person with an intellectual disability with a thought bubble: “I said no.”

The trouble is that coercion often doesn’t feel like coercion to the person using it. It feels like helping. It feels like moving the day along. It feels like doing your job.
..

ID: Image shows a man looking sad. Title reads: Coercion in disability services. Speech bubbles coming from others around the mad read: “Don’t make my job harder.” “If you do this now, we can go out later.” “If you don’t shower, you can’t go.” “This is just what we do.”
