More about Rio Vista's new K9 Rio:

Chief Dailey announces K9 fundraising has started!
Sergeant Todd Milowe from Rio Vista Police Department · 26 Jul
City Manager Rob Hickey approved the addition of a patrol and drug detection K9 to the Rio Vista Police Department. This asset will be very useful in increasing officer safety, reducing the time it takes to locate and arrest fleeing suspects and decrease the time it takes to search buildings after an alarm or break in.

The K9 team of Officer Rafferty and her dog will also begin directed enforcement targeting illegal drugs in Rio Vista. The goal is to reduce the amount of illegal drug possession and use, along with arresting those who use Highway 12 as a means to avoid interdiction efforts on Highways 80 and 4. Rio Vista Police will be working closely with the District Attorney and other agencies to resume asset seizures of drug money and vehicles used to illegally transport drugs.

The next step in the process is to select and purchase the right dog for Rio Vista. A newly formed non-profit group called “Friends of Rio Vista Police” has offered to raise the funds needed to purchase the dog and provide training for Officer Rafferty. The initial costs for the fully trained team will total around $30,000. City Manager Rob Hickey has committed the city to providing all on-going funding associated with the K9 program.

If you would like to help or contribute to the costs of the K9 program, please contact Victoria at Petals on Main Street, 122 Main Street in Rio Vista. Victoria will be spearheading the “Friends of Rio Vista Police” efforts to raise money for this and other projects within the police department.

Rio Vista Police Department are training their first K9 after receiving great community support for the program:

"Rio" begins his police training!
Chief Dan Dailey from Rio Vista Police Department · 5 Apr
THANK YOU RIO VISTA! Your generous donations and the hard work and dedication of our "Friends" have paid off. After a lengthy selection process where RVPD and our K9 training partners evaluated several K9 recruits, we are happy to report that we have selected our new K9. Without your generosity we could not have made this happen.

Rio and his human partner (driver) Officer Rafferty will begin their K9 team training next week. They will undergo five weeks of intensive training toward their certification as a patrol and drug detection K9 team. Once training is done and they obtain their certification we will begin introducing Rio to the community by attending events and just stopping to say hi.

Rio Vista Police are training their first K9, beginning this week. Excellent!

Odd K9 story, seen on AOL news:
A Florida man made history by asking a dog to come in and testify for him. Rodney McGee had sent a subpoena for German Shepherd Officer Azor K9 to testify in his defense for a citation for failing to use his turn signal. Azor’s handler had brought the dog to the traffic stop in February, thinking McGee had drugs, but he came up clean. The judge did not allow the dog to testify in the court, but McGee is still proud of the fact that he's the first in Charlotte County to subpoena a dog.

It must be so hard for such an active dog to just lie there. I hope the perp is forced to sleep in a kennel at the county animal pound for a few years.

BODIE UPDATE: Bodie's condition was upgraded to Fair today. He underwent chest x-rays to check for pneumonia and he was good. Bodie is scheduled for surgery tomorrow to remove bullet fragments from his face and paw.
