Lyric Farm

Lyric Farm Hi! I'm Michelle! With the help of my reluctant honey, Chris, and my longsuffering parents, I run The Refuge at Lyric Farm, a small animal sanctuary.

Lyric Farm is the home of The Refuge at Lyric Farm, a nonprofit animal sanctuary in Massachusetts dedicated to rescuing and caring for special-needs animals, while creating meaningful, hands-on experiences for people of all ages. 💜 Lyric Farm (although it was not called that at the time) got its start in 2003, when, in addition to the six rescue cats I already had, I rescued one lamb, one goat kid

, and four rabbits. (Chris was completely speechless for two whole days; my parents took it in stride.) Since that time my menagerie has grown, and as of January 2020, we *finally* have our own property! In addition to selling farm fresh eggs (which we currently do), my dream is to offer opportunities for members of the public to learn about growing their own food, cooking with vegetables, preserving their harvest, caring for the types of animals we have on the farm (before they dive into keeping any for themselves), processing wool, spinning, knitting, crocheting, soap making, and cheese making, among other fun stuff! We also dream of hosting summer day camps and field trips for school groups to come learn about growing food, animal care, and both forest and wetland ecology. We are thrilled to announce that The Refuge at Lyric Farm is now a project of Players Philanthropy Fund, Inc, a Texas nonprofit corporation recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Federal Tax ID: 27-6601178, ppf.org/pp). Contributions to The Refuge at Lyric Farm qualify as tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. As always, interaction with the animals is encouraged! Feel free to contact us if you are interested in volunteering as we'd love the help! In the meantime, we are continuing to make appearances with various animals from the resident herd for birthday parties, family reunions, and at places such as churches, summer camps, Vacation Bible Schools, libraries, community functions and Live Nativity presentations. Please feel free to contact us if you'd like to have us come to YOUR event! On this page you will see pictures of the critters and updates on our status as we work toward making the dream come true! (Check back later for the link to our website, which is currently under construction.)

Found on the Farm: The Moon Over My Molly

The past couple of nights have been beautiful here at the sanctuary.

The sky has been clear enough that the waxing moon has shone brilliantly, illuminating the night while playing hide-and-seek with the clouds.

I captured this shot of Glory, one of our resident mollies*, as she was eating her hay, just as the almost-full Sturgeon Moon peeked through the wisps high above her. It’s so bright you can clearly see the shadow Glory casts in the moonlight.

It had been a long, busy day and was already after 11 pm. I was exhausted and stressed about allll the things. We were just finishing up our barn chores and I was looking for a glimpse of natural beauty and peace to connect to–-a God Wink, if you will.

This scene caught my eye and was just what I needed to help release some of my tension: Glory munching her hay, calm, content, without a care in her mind beyond enjoying her food. She trusts the Bringer of Dinner to provide what she needs, when she needs it.

And I can, too.

A couple of weekends ago we had the opportunity to host the potluck church picnic for The College Church of Seventh-day Adventists. ⛪

We had wonderful food, meaningful conversation, and of course a trip to the barn for those who wanted to meet the animals.

When we assembled for a photograph, the only animals who wanted to be in it were Tempe and Red, two of our livestock guardian dogs. Really they just wanted pets. They’ll give anyone who wants to give gentle attention ample opportunity–and still beg for more!

Thank you, friends, for coming! 💜

Our pony mule Glory (and her bonded friend, Hope) came to us from Save Your Ass Long Ear Rescue in 2013. When I contacted them, I was looking for a guardian donkey to protect the other rescued livestock. They didn’t have any donkeys available at the time, but they did talk me into our two “Big Girls.”

While things didn’t work out quite the way I thought they would, Hope and Glory became part of the family, so they stayed just the same. (We eventually got LGDs to protect the herd.)

Glory, who is now approximately 20 years old, is very clever and somewhat mischievous, especially as it relates to food. We had to reinforce the barn door latches with extra clips because she knows how to open them if they’re not clipped. She has let herself and Hope into the feed stall several times, which makes a mess and can be dangerous!

Unlike calm and steady Hope, Glory can be excitable at times. She tends to startle easily when certain routine tasks are being done around her, and especially dislikes the manure sled.

In spite of her excitability, Glory LOVES children, and stands calmly and quietly for them to pet her. She will also stand at the paddock fence for treats–even if they are offered by an adult.

You may notice we refer to Glory and Hope as the “mollies” quite often in our posts; a molly is another name for a female mule! 🐴

Happy Monday? 🤔

According to Maya, that’s debatable. 😝

Here’s hoping you’re more enthusiastic than she is, and that your week is a pleasant surprise! 😃

BOLO IN BELLINGHAM! 👀

🚨 RESCUE ALERT — BELLINGHAM 🚨

We have a rescue unfolding this evening, and we need the help of our Bellingham community!

On Wednesday, a mother cat and her six kittens suddenly appeared in the yard of a residence in Bellingham. Sometime during the day, three of the kittens completely disappeared. The family checked their cameras and found no signs of predators, and because the kittens vanished during daylight hours, we are concerned they may have become frightened and wandered away from their mother and siblings.

Tonight, we were able to safely trap Mom and two of her babies. The remaining kitten has been hiding in a small den underneath the wooden decking at the residence. ❤️

We are actually using Mom to help us with the rescue. Having her safely on site has been incredibly helpful in encouraging the little one to come out of hiding. We are working tonight to get that final kitten safely into the trap and reunited with his family.

📍 BELLINGHAM — CENTER STREET AREA

We are asking everyone near 53 Center Street and the surrounding area to please keep your eyes open for three orange kittens who are still missing.

They may have become frightened, wandered farther than expected, or become separated from their family. Please check under decks, sheds, porches, bushes, vehicles, and other small hiding places.

🐾 If you see an orange kitten, please do NOT chase or try to catch them. Keep eyes on the kitten and contact us immediately so we can coordinate a safe rescue. 508-212-4096

📱 Please share this post widely. Someone nearby may have seen one of these babies without realizing they are part of an active rescue.

We are hoping for a happy ending tonight and, with a little help from our community, we can get these babies safely back together. ❤️🐾
Pictured here are the two babies that are safe and secure. 🙏

Baaaa... I have a secret. 🤭
Hi friends, it's Wesley here.

I have been helping Mummy work on something really fun behind the scenes, and I can't wait to show you.

It has coloring…
It has animals…

And I think you’re going to LOVE it. And your kids. And your grandkids!

I'll be back soon to tell you all about it!
