Our Story
If anything is uniquely Milwaukee, it’s what can be achieved when a small group of people decide to create change for the better. During Milwaukee’s infancy, seven women who believed children needed specialized health care beyond what could be found at an adult hospital bucked the system in order to start what is now Children’s Wisconsin. What began in a small row house in 1894 is today the No. 4 pediatric hospital in the nation – a feat in and of itself considering it serves the smallest market footprint of any other top-10 children’s hospital. Ask around and the vast majority of Wisconsinites will tell you their lives have been touched in some way by Children’s Wisconsin. In fact, look no further than every September, when 15,000 people line up on Wisconsin Avenue to participate in a time-honored Milwaukee tradition – Briggs and Al’s Run & Walk for Children’s Wisconsin. Their outward support for Children’s Wisconsin – and the thousands of others who over the years have invested in this true community asset – honors what was begun by those seven brave, resourceful women. And thanks to this truly Milwaukee asset, Wisconsin kids have a dedicated advocate to ensure they receive nothing less than the very best care possible right in their own backyard at Children’s Wisconsin or one of its 70 specialty clinics and 20+ primary care clinics throughout the state – whether for the most routine or for the most serious health concerns.
