Great leaders don't avoid hard conversations!

They learn how to have them without destroying the other person.

There are moments in leadership when something has to be said.

• A standard wasn't met.

• A commitment wasn't kept.

• A decision needs to be challenged.

• A behavior needs to change.

Avoiding the conversation may feel easier in the moment, but silence rarely makes the problem better.

At the same time, being right doesn't give us permission to be reckless with another person.

There is a difference between correcting someone and humiliating them.

• Between being direct and being cruel.

• Between holding someone accountable and making them feel
like they have no value beyond the mistake they made.

A difficult conversation should leave someone understanding what needs to change — NOT wondering whether they still matter.

You can say, "This isn't good enough," while still communicating, "I believe you're capable of better."

You can protect the standard without attacking the person.

You can be honest without stripping away someone's dignity.

That's one of the harder responsibilities of leadership.

Because the goal isn't to win the conversation.

THE GOAL IS TO MAKE WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE CONVERSATION BETTER.
