Hauʻoli Lā Hānau, Duke Kahanamoku!

Today we celebrate the birthday of Duke Kahanamoku (1890–1968)—Olympian, world-renowned surfer, and beloved ambassador of aloha. Duke’s legacy lives on, not only through the sport of surfing, but also through his commitment to uplifting Hawaiʻi’s youth.

As we honor Duke’s life, we also celebrate the opportunities his legacy creates for the next generation of leaders.

Born in Honolulu on August 20th, 1908, Gladys Kamakakūokalani ʻAinoa Brant was both an educator and civic leader in Hawai‘i.

Gladys graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Hawai‘i and taught in public schools on both Maui and Kauaʻi. She was the first woman to serve as a principal at both Kalaheo and Kapa‘a schools and later became the first Native Hawaiian principal of the Kamehameha School for Girls in 1963.

Gladys advocated for preserving Native Hawaiian traditions and played a pivotal role in founding the University of Hawaii's Hawaiian Studies Center.

“In education, not anger, resides our future. In education, not ignorance, resides our hope. In education, not fear, resides justice.” - Gladys Kamakakūokalani ʻAinoa Brant
