Each week, we’ll honor one horse from the Wild Heart Herd. Today, we honor Wind Walker—the lead mare who inspired the beginning of Wild Heart Sanctuary.
Wind Walker carries the quiet strength of a mother: protective, wise, and deeply devoted to her herd. Before coming to Wild Heart, she was the lead mare of the Sinbad herd near Price, Utah.
In 2008, Wind Walker had recently given birth to her filly, Noble Moon, when BLM helicopters arrived and rounded up several of the Sinbad Herd (SE Utah). Sonya witnessed their arrival at the holding pens—a heartbreaking and traumatic experience she has never forgotten.
During the roundup, Wind Walker was struck with long sticks and ran around a corner, where she slammed her jaw and suffered a an injury. Because of that injury, she might have been destined for slaughter.
But Wind Walker was a brand-new mother. Her four-month-old filly still depended on her to survive.
When Sonya asked what would happen to the baby, she was told, “She will figure it out.”
Sonya knew that separating Noble Moon from her mother could be fatal. Although she didn’t yet have sanctuary property, she refused to stand by and let this mother and baby be torn apart.
She purchased them both—and saved their lives.
Wind Walker and Noble Moon became the first two members of what would become Wild Heart Sanctuary, a herd that has now grown to nine.
Wind Walker’s determination, courage, and profound bond with Sonya sparked the beginning of a dream: a safe haven for wild horses who deserved a second chance.
Today, we honor Wind Walker—the mother, the protector, and the heart of Wild Heart Sanctuary. 🤍🐴
