What does it look like when a cohort of emerging leaders ends their year together? For the CIVIC Scholars Class of 2026, it looked like this…

The day began with our inaugural Leadership Symposium, opened by CIVIC Leadership Institute's President & CEO Mary Kate Andris, followed by an inspiring keynote from CIVIC Scholars alum Marjorie Cenese. Kristin Stephens led students through an exploration of leadership styles, values, and what it means to find their why, and Chekesha White, Executive Director of G.I.R.L.S. Club, presented a powerful session on mentorship.

We then transitioned into our Graduation and Closing Reception, where mentors, families, and friends joined us to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2026. Thank you to class speaker Daniel Letter for sharing his story, and congratulations to each of our Scholars for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment.

We can't wait to see where this class takes it from here!

Alongside our longstanding partners, Old Dominion University and Tidewater Community College, CIVIC Leadership Institute is pleased to announce Regent University and Virginia Wesleyan University are joining CIVIC Scholars - expanding opportunities for high-potential students to connect, grow, and lead alongside peers from across the region.

Together, these institutions are making an intentional investment in their students by broadening access to a year-long, high-impact student leadership and professional development experience designed to build a pipeline of future leaders in Hampton Roads.

Yesterday, several CIVIC Scholars stepped into a unique opportunity to learn alongside members of the CIVIC Executive program during their program day focused on regional growth and infrastructure.

The experience began at the Norfolk Botanical Garden, where Scholars explored how the garden is expanding its impact through projects like the Garden of Tomorrow. Guided by Kelly Welsh, the group gained a behind-the-scenes look at how long-term vision, conservation, and community engagement come together in practice.

The afternoon, hosted by Norfolk International Airport, focused on regional connectivity. Ryan Banas provided a comprehensive look at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion, followed by a presentation from Norfolk Airport Authority’s CEO Mark Perryman (CIVIC Executive Class ’25) about the airport’s exciting expansion projects.

The day created space for Scholars to engage with executive leaders and see firsthand how leadership shows up across our region’s sectors.

Building on their January visit to the Virginia Capitol, Scholars gained insight into Virginia’s recent legislative session during a General Assembly Recap led by Kemper Consulting's Joel Andrus (CIVIC Executive Class of ’16) and Ross Grogg (CIVIC Executive Class of ’17).

This session connected firsthand experience with a deeper understanding of the outcomes and impact of this year’s legislative work, while also providing a clearer view of the policy landscape and creating space for thoughtful questions and discussion around civic engagement.
