It is a year long extracurricular program that runs through the academic year.

The CIVIC Scholars Program is a collaborative initiative of the CIVIC Leadership Institute with a mission to foster a spirit of civic engagement, professionalism, and leadership among a select cohort of college students in Hampton Roads, VA. This year marks an exciting new chapter for CIVIC Scholars as we welcome our largest and most dynamic cohort yet, bringing together exceptional students from across the region, representing Batten University, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Tidewater Community College, and Regent University.

Selected for their leadership and professional potential, commitment to their communities, and drive to make a difference, these exceptional students represent the next generation of leaders who will help shape our region’s future. Over the coming year, they'll strengthen their leadership and professional skills, build meaningful relationships with executive leaders, and deepen their understanding of Hampton Roads.

Day 3 of the CIVIC Scholars Opening Retreat focused on professional development, with the goal of helping Scholars leave the weekend feeling prepared, equipped, and confident as they begin their CIVIC Scholars experience.

Scholars practiced networking and professional introductions, learned how to build credibility in professional settings, and explored how LinkedIn can support relationship-building and career growth.

Day 2 of the CIVIC Scholars Opening Retreat was a full one!

Scholars spent the day learning by doing: working through team-building activities focused on communication and trust, tackling the low ropes challenge course, exploring how culture and perspective shape the way we interact with others, and engaging in conversations about leadership.

There was also time to slow down, recharge, and simply enjoy being together. Some Scholars tried archery for the first time, others made friendship bracelets or enjoyed getting to know each other on the pier, and the evening brought more fireside conversation and connection.

A special highlight was our Peer Mentor Fellows adding a little fun (and hilarity) with a surprise “what to wear, what not to wear” fashion show focused on different professional events a Scholar may attend.

This was exactly the kind of day that helps turn a group of students from five different universities into one connected cohort. Thank you to our wonderful Jamestown 4H facilitators for tailoring programming specifically for our students!

The CIVIC Scholars Class of 2027 officially kicked off their program year this weekend with an Opening Retreat at Jamestown 4-H, bringing together exceptional students (and future community leaders) from Batten University, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Regent University, and Tidewater Community College for three days of learning, team-building, and connection.

Day 1 focused on helping Scholars get grounded in both the program and one another. Students took part in icebreakers, program orientation, and conversations about what to expect throughout the year, along with the expectations that come with being a CIVIC Scholar.

From there, the team-building began. Scholars worked through two survival challenges that required communication, collaboration, and group decision-making, then ended the evening around the campfire for our first fireside gathering as a cohort.

What a great start to a full weekend together and to the CIVIC Scholars year ahead - stay tuned for Days 2 and 3!

Today’s Welcome Reception brought the CIVIC Scholars Class of 2027 together for the first time, giving our newest cohort of Scholars the chance to meet one another and begin building connections with each other, their peer mentors, and Scholars Alumni.

We’re excited to bring this outstanding group of student leaders from Batten University, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Regent University, and Tidewater Community College together for a year of leadership, learning, regional exploration, and connection.

A special thank you to our Scholars Alumni panelists Chantell Cherry, Daniel Letter, Melvin Roy, and Taylor Stewart for sharing their experiences and insights, and to Jhimere Harper-Ruffin for serving as our alumni speaker!

As we look ahead to a new CIVIC Scholars year, we’re looking back at some of the experiences that shaped last year’s program!

🎓💡 At the inaugural CIVIC Scholars Leadership Symposium, the Class of 2026 came together to reflect on their growth and prepare for what comes next. Scholars heard from CIVIC Scholars alumni and community leaders, explored leadership styles, values, and purpose, and participated in a powerful session on mentorship. The day brought together many of the themes woven throughout the program year while giving Scholars space to consider how they will carry those lessons into their careers and communities.

As we look ahead to a new CIVIC Scholars year, we’re looking back at some of the experiences that shaped last year’s program!

🌺✈️ For a tourism-focused program experience, CIVIC Scholars were invited to learn alongside members of the CIVIC Executive Program at the Norfolk Botanical Garden and Norfolk International Airport. The day included a behind-the-scenes look at the Garden of Tomorrow and the garden’s broader expansion and conservation efforts, insight into the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel project, and an overview of extensive growth projects underway at the airport. Throughout the experience, Scholars also connected with executive leaders and saw how tourism, infrastructure, and regional development work together to shape Hampton Roads.

🏆🍴 At the annual Darden Awards, CIVIC Scholars joined executives and community leaders from across Hampton Roads to celebrate the individuals and organizations whose leadership and service have strengthened our region. Scholars also served as event ambassadors, contributing to the guest experience while gaining the opportunity to expand their professional networks, navigate a large regional event, and see firsthand the impact of sustained civic and community leadership.
