JEWEL - PART ONE: THE RACEHORSE NO ONE WANTED 🐴💔
I once had another name—printed in racing programs and called out over loudspeakers. People knew me because I could run, and I could win. But behind the scenes, my world never felt safe. I was barely more than a baby when a small stall became my entire world. Day after day, humans made all the decisions. I was expected to strictly comply: Move. Stand here. Train. Run. Do what you’re told. Somewhere along the way, fear turned into anger, and anger became rage. People backed away from rage. They paid attention to it. For a horse who had no say in her own life, that mattered. I quickly became known as “difficult” and “dangerous.” But underneath the defensive fury, I just wanted grass, sunshine, and a place to breathe. I wanted to know what “home” felt like. Eventually, I became the horse nobody wanted to deal with anymore. Unwanted.

That’s when I arrived at The Equine Sanctuary. I came in ready for a battle, waiting for the painful consequences of disobeying. Except, something was completely different here. Instead of asking, “How are we going to make this horse behave?” someone asked: “What is she trying so desperately to tell us?”I had spent my life becoming louder and louder because I didn’t believe anyone could hear me. For the first time… someone was listening. And that was the beginning of everything changing.✨ To be continued...📍

The Equine Sanctuary: Where the rescued become the rescuers.

There are places where horses are rescued.

And then there are places where the rescued become the rescuers.

For more than 27 years, The Equine Sanctuary, a sanctioned Thoroughbred facility, has stood in the sacred space between what was lost and what can still be restored.

We rescue retiring Thoroughbred racehorses whose careers have ended and who have nowhere safe to go...horses facing injury, abandonment, or the very real risk of being sent to slaughter..

But rescue is only where their story begins.

Here in Colorado, something extraordinary happens.
The horse who once needed saving learns to trust again.

And then one day, a Veteran carrying wounds no one can see stands beside that horse.

A child who has known trauma reaches out a small hand.

A grieving heart grows quiet.

A frightened soul feels safe.

And somehow, without a single word being spoken, the one who was rescued begins rescuing someone else.

That is the sacred circle we are privileged to witness here.

Horses. Veterans. Children in carefully guided programs. Volunteers. Rescue animals of every kind.

Lives meeting lives.

Healing meeting healing.

Grace meeting us exactly where we are.

We believe every life has value. That brokenness is not the end of the story. That love can restore what the world has discarded.

And sometimes, by the grace of God, healing arrives on four legs.

We have the chance to stand between two innocent lives and a fate they never chose.

Cooper and his sister, Sasha, are sitting in the Devore shelter tonight — discarded by humans, unwanted through absolutely no fault of their own, and dependent on strangers to decide whether their story ends there… or begins again.

We have said YES to both of them. We are pulling Cooper and Sasha tomorrow.

But saying yes is only the beginning.

We need help with their shelter bail, immediate transport to safety, boarding, food, veterinary care, and everything that comes next while we work to find these two beautiful souls the loving homes they should have had all along.

They did not choose to be abandoned.
They did not choose a shelter kennel.
They did not choose to become numbers on a list.

And they should not have to pay with their lives for the failure of the humans who were supposed to protect them.

Please help us save Cooper and Sasha.

Every donation — $10, $25, $50, whatever you can give — becomes part of the bridge that carries them out of that shelter and into safety.

We cannot save every animal waiting behind those doors.

But tomorrow, we can save these two.

I have been at the shelter since Aug 23, 2026.
I was found near Post Office Rd X Rabbit Springs Rd in Lucerne Valley.

Today, Dom is no longer a number on a kill shelter's kennel door. 💝

Only days ago, Dom was sitting in a Southern California kill shelter after more than 100 days behind bars, that's over 3 months!

Today, he is discovering what it feels like to be loved.

Dom is sweet, playful, intelligent, affectionate, and eager to please. He learns quickly, loves people, loves other dogs, and appears to believe that every good life should include a comfortable couch and a long car ride.

His extraordinary transport angel fell completely in love with him and it is easy to understand why.

After leaving the shelter, Dom spent his first night of freedom in San Diego with his transport and her Rhodesian Ridgeback. What followed may have been the best 48 hours of his young life.

He enjoyed car rides, ball time, a warm bath, playdates with other Ridgebacks, gentle human attention, and the simple miracle of finally being treated like someone’s cherished puppy..

He even tried on a few cowboy hats because at first, we believed he might be heading to a cattle ranch in Tennessee.

But life had another plan.

That placement is no longer moving forward, ( because we emphasize as close to a perfect situation as possible and Tenn seems geared to a working dog, not a couch 🥔 !) which means Dom is now officially looking for the loving home he was always meant to have.

He is currently safe in Santa Barbara, California, where he is spending time with other dogs, building confidence, learning good manners, and showing everyone just how adaptable and special he truly is. His transport angel has even made the trip back to visit him, (10 hour round trip) because some dogs simply leave a mark on your heart.

Dom loves both two-legged and four-legged friends. He is playful without being overwhelming, affectionate without being demanding, and smart enough to understand quickly what is being asked of him.

After everything he has endured, he has not lost his joy.

He has not lost his trust.

He has not lost his willingness to love.

That may be the most remarkable thing about him.

Dom did not need a perfect world.

He simply needed someone to choose him.

Now he needs the final piece of his rescue story: a committed, loving forever home where couches are welcoming, car rides are plentiful, playtime is sacred, and he will never again wonder whether he belongs.
