When my Granddaughter was still a toddler in diapers, I would take her along to feed our horses. Once, when I reached down to pick up all four feed buckets to carry out to our herd, she threw herself to the ground and began crying, beating the dirt with her fists and kicking up dust with her kid-sized boots!

Yikes! 😳

I thought quickly and handed her one of the feed buckets to carry. 😥

She stood right up, wiped her tears, and went to work helping me feed our horses. 🤯

She's a teenager now, and when I remind her of this story, I tell her, "I pity the fool who doesn't hire you for a job you want!" 😆

In this photo, she is taking private horsemanship lessons with Relationship-Based Horsemanship instructor Bo Mann (now of Aiken, South Carolina) at age 4. 🥰

May the Horse be with you,

Happy Birthday to Linda Parelli!

I always thought saying “we ride at dawn” sounded so badass...

But dawn is really early. Could we ride around 10, after I’ve had my coffee?

Come ride with me in the stunning red cliffs of Moab in April - not at dawn 😉, and get your professional pictures taken too!

The Trails & Tales Experience will take place from April 11-16th, 2027.

This weekend was a reminder that no matter how experienced you are, horses are still 1,200-pound animals with minds of their own.

One of our trainers, Maddie, took a hard fall at Firecracker jackpot. It wasn’t because of a lack of talent from horse or rider, nor from ground conditions. It was simply one of those unpredictable moments that can happen to any of us. That’s the reality of this sport. We can do everything right and still find ourselves in situations we never expected.

That’s also why our advanced trainer, Payton, has worn a helmet every time she’s competed since the day she started. Even now, you’ll still see her in the competition arena with a helmet on and with no plans to stop. Experience doesn’t make you invincible. If anything, it teaches you to respect the risks that come with the sport we love.

Wearing a helmet doesn’t mean you’re not confident. It doesn’t make you less capable. It means you understand the risks and value the chance to ride another day.

You only get one brain. Protect it.

If this weekend reminds even one rider to put on a helmet before they swing a leg over, then it’s a conversation worth having. Ride hard, chase your goals, trust your horse, and never let pride stand in the way of protecting yourself. At the end of the day, no run is worth a life-changing injury.

EDIT: Wanted to add, Maddie and Rumor are okay! Sore, bruised, but back to work. Both are gritty girls!! We are so lucky to have them.
Also, reminder this is NO ONE’s fault! The ground was great all weekend. This team just had a freak accident!

Another EDIT: Since so many people think this is AI, I’m tagging the PHENOMENAL photographer that took this picture Andrew Jungkunz! I should have done that from the get go, but I didn’t think this would get so much traction.

Our Chief Youth Officer, Ada Draghici of Equus Salutis 🇨🇦, is offering guidance for rehabbing thoracic sling collapse in the form of a free video.

One commenter wrote, 'I can warmly recommend this course to anyone - no matter horse, person, or level. Equus Salutis is an amazing instructor with tremendous knowledge, a sharp mind, and unlimited empathy and patience for both horse and human. A rare horsewoman to find who gave me back some hope in humanity.'

***This post originally started as an anti "putting-the-horse-on-the-bit" text, with a little mention about side reins/pessoas/martingales.

Let me get that bit off my chest and then I will share HOW to do the classical alternative.
I'm begging the Internet to see that putting the horse on the bit, or asking a horse for vertical flexion is a dead end.
Horses never rehab with an artificial frame.****

This is Kai, aka my first pony, the center of my universe, who has now been in my life for 11 years.
For those new to the page, he had a severe neck injury at age 5 that nearly cost him his life (if you'd like to know the story, feel free to ask)

As I was scrolling through photos of him over the years I clearly saw that his health and soundness was a direct reflection of my level of education at the time.

This is sobering or deeply inspiring, depending on how how I wish to think about it. That the health of our horses is a direct reflection on the level of education of their human, thus making education our core responsibility as their caretakers.

I would like to loudly point out that Kai's poll remained the HIGHEST POINT in each photo, and that this rehab had ZERO stretchy trotting, stationary thoracic sling push-ups, or attempts to get his head down like all beginner purgatory dressage dogma is telling students to do.
Look at the position of his c5, c6, c7 in the left picture, and realize that the base of his neck would remain collapsed even if I used reins to get vertical flexion out of him. Keeping the poll the highest point is so important for soundness.

Now, how to do this.
1. Poll mobilizations
2. Shoulder in (send horse sideways to some capacity and when they understand it, move on to diagonal balance movements. I mean within 2 weeks max in most cases, not months or years)
3. Diagonal balance/RENVERS
4. Introduce piaffe and canter

I have published on this page a free detailed, 4 part series on teaching the progression from basic sideways, to haunches in, to renvers. This is the exact progression most people are missing between basic in hand, and introducing collection to their horse.
Those videos are not an infomercial and are produced to the quality of expensive courses, because I am against gatekeeping this knowledge.
(Please use the search bar to look them up, I have spent too much time fetching links for people for something that is already free to view 😆)

And if you are looking for more coaching 💓

I would also like to share that the Diagonal rebalancing course (renvers club 2.0!!)
Is coming back bigger and better.
