Behind every real community victory are people who do the steady, often unseen work that keeps momentum alive when progress feels slow. Katie has been one of those consistent forces in the advocacy for more gym spaces and safe environments for youth in Brooklyn Park, starting from early efforts around the Community Activity Center project in 2023. From the beginning, she stayed actively engaged in building awareness, helping the community understand what was at stake and what steps were needed to move the vision forward.⁣

Her commitment played a meaningful role in the successful push that helped secure $7.5M in state funding for a new multi-court facility in Brooklyn Park. She made sure the public stayed informed throughout the process, helping translate information into action and keeping momentum strong at every stage. Katie represents what true grassroots advocacy looks like, consistent, hands-on, and deeply invested in creating spaces that will serve youth and families for years to come.

I am proud to share some incredible news for the Brooklyn Park community.

Last evening, the Minnesota State Legislature approved an additional $7.5 million in funding for the Brooklyn Park Community Activity Center expansion and improvements. This investment will support the creation of a multi-court gymnasium, upgrades to entrances and corridors, and the development of additional parking at the CAC. Combined with the bonding support we secured in 2023, this brings us significantly closer to fully realizing a space our community has long advocated for and deeply deserves.

For the past three years, I have been fighting for basketball courts and expanded recreational opportunities in Brooklyn Park. This journey has required persistence, partnership, and unwavering belief in what our youth, families, and residents deserve. In 2023, we secured $5 million in bonding support from the State. Last night marked another major milestone with the approval of an additional $7.5 million in funding.

This moment would not have been possible without the collective voices of this community. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to every resident, advocate, parent, and supporter who stood alongside us throughout this process. Many of you attended city council meetings, traveled to the State Capitol to advocate, sent emails, wrote letters, and made phone calls. Your voices mattered, and they made a difference.

I especially want to recognize an incredible Brooklyn Park resident, Collette, who has been a consistent and passionate advocate for the youth of our city for many years. For more than five years, she has shown up to nearly every city council meeting, remaining steadfast in her support for our community and its future. Her dedication, presence, and belief in this vision have been a continual source of encouragement throughout this journey.

I also want to thank Minnesota State Representative Huldah Hiltsley for listening to our concerns and understanding the importance of a multi-purpose facility for our community. Last year, she had the foresight to draft a bill seeking the additional funding needed to support this project, even though it was ultimately unable to make it to the floor for a vote. She did not give up. She returned this year even more determined to see this funding approved, and her leadership and persistence helped move this vision forward.

There are so many others to thank, and I look forward to recognizing more of the individuals and partners who helped make this possible in the days ahead.

This victory belongs to all of us. It is proof of what can happen when a community comes together with a shared vision and refuses to give up on the future it wants to build.

While there is still more work ahead, today we celebrate how far we’ve come and what this investment means for the generations of young people and families who will benefit from it for years to come.

Sometimes a vision comes together in ways you never could have scripted, and it truly feels like the stars are aligning for the Minnesota CHILL Foundation. As we prepare to launch our CHILL Tech program inside “The Wood” Teen Center in Brooklyn Park, we are especially excited that the program will be hosted in the Best Buy Teen Tech Center. Even more exciting, our first cohort registration was filled within two days, confirming just how hungry young people are for access, opportunity, and a future in tech. This opportunity allows us to create a space where youth are not only introduced to technology but empowered through it. Our goal is to provide programs that help youth build confidence, leadership skills, creativity, workforce readiness, and entrepreneurial thinking. Through hands-on learning and real-world exposure, participants will gain the tools and inspiration to see beyond their current circumstances and envision the possibilities for their future.⁣
⁣
The ultimate goal of CHILL Tech is to spark enough interest and passion in technology that participants choose to continue their education, earn industry-recognized certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+, and pursue meaningful careers in information technology. By creating a clear pathway from exposure to education, certification, and employment, we hope to equip young people with the skills and confidence to build successful and rewarding futures in the technology field.⁣

Minnesota CHILL Foundation was honored to spend the day in Brooklyn Park, first participating in the Champlin Park Career and College Fair alongside an incredible lineup of institutions and organizations all committed to one shared mission: opening doors for the next generation. From universities to trade programs and industry leaders, the room was filled with opportunities designed to help students see what is possible and take confident steps toward their future. A special thank you to Regan Shaare for the invitation and for continuing to create spaces where students can explore, connect, and envision their next chapter. ⁣

The day carried even deeper meaning with the presence of William “Chuckie” Hill, Assistant Principal, whose leadership and daily impact within the school continue to shape the very environment these students are growing in. His role is influential, intentional, and rooted in guiding students toward success both inside and beyond the classroom.⁣

The energy continued as the Champlin Park Student Council hosted a student-led basketball tournament, proudly supported by Minnesota CHILL Foundation. It was a powerful reminder of what happens when young leaders are given the space to create, lead, and bring their ideas to life.⁣

What made the day even more meaningful was witnessing it through a personal lens. Watching their son show up in excellence at the very school he once walked as a student was a moment filled with pride. Cindy Hill and Chuck Hill, co-founders of Minnesota CHILL Foundation, had the honor of attending The Link’s sold-out 10th Annual Gala at the Armory, joining a powerful room of leaders, advocates, and changemakers committed to creating meaningful, lasting impact. The evening was more than a celebration, it was a collective commitment to showing up for youth who deserve support, stability, and opportunity.⁣

Every moment reflected the heart behind the mission. From the stories shared to the energy in the room, it was a beautiful tribute to the legacy of Jim Marshall and a reminder of what is possible when purpose leads the way. The work being done continues to transform lives, providing critical support, safe housing, and real pathways forward for young people navigating some of life’s most difficult challenges.⁣

The Teen Center The Wood Zanewood Recreation Center is now officially open, and what was once an idea is now a living, breathing space filled with possibility, purpose, and community. From the energy in the gym to the creativity waiting to be explored in every corner, this space was designed for more than activity, it was designed for impact.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We’re grateful for every person who showed up, supported, and believed in what this could become. This is only the beginning. New programs, powerful partnerships, and life-changing opportunities are on the horizon, and we’re excited to watch this space come alive through the young people it was created for.⁣⁣

Cities United created a powerful and necessary space where young Black men were able to speak openly, and without limitation about what they truly need from our communities and our generations. The level of honesty, courage, and clarity these young men carried was both moving and necessary. It was a reminder that when we create intentional spaces for them to be heard, they will rise to the moment in ways that challenge us all to do better.⁣
⁣
I was deeply impressed by the collective effort behind this experience, from Cities United to the county and city partners who understand the urgency of this work. Bringing this kind of platform to Minnesota, especially Minneapolis, is not just impactful, it is essential in shifting narratives and addressing the real needs of our young Black boys and men. This is the kind of work that creates awareness, accountability, and forward movement.⁣
⁣
Much respect to Cities United for opening this door and to the community violence prevention groups who continue to stand alongside these young men every day. And a special acknowledgment to KB from WolfPack Promotionals for creating an environment that allowed this experience to be both powerful and welcoming.
