Sanctuary update:
We are incredible grateful to Cody Wyman and Troy Furse who donated time and equipment to help us build a new driveway and clear several acres of land for our next step forward in building our sanctuary. We are so excited to see these changes and have several more exciting changes coming to the property this summer!!

Starlight Mustang Sanctuary is proud to present
Wild Horse Wednesdays

Wild horse photographers play an important role in the wild horse community, drawing people in with their beauty while sharing stories of their perseverance and survival.

Featured photographer:
Herd: North herd, Onaqui, UT
Horse(s) if known: Eleanor

Liz has created more than a portrait of a wild mare, she has created a window into Eleanor's soul. This image captures the tenacity and wisdom of one of the herd's oldest mares. By capturing her thoughtful eyes and tousled fairy knots caked with ancient sand, Liz has shown us a desert beauty and symbol of the American West.

Feather in the Groove

Feather is settling into sanctuary life and has decided he likes R plus training (positive reinforcement). He has progressed the point where he readily puts his head into a halter and waits to see what I want to do next. I took these photos of him earlier this week and I absolutely love how it shows off his dapples. To see his dapples check out the second photo. They can be hard to see on a photograph, especially of a bay but when he moves in sunlight it is exquisite.

For anyone who is curious about equine dappling: dapples refer to the patches or circles of lighter or darker colors appearing across the horse's coat. These are often seen on the hips, midsection or shoulders. While genetics are responsible for the ability to dabble, these beautiful spots are a visual indicator of good nutrition, excellent grooming, and peak physical condition. Dapples appear seasonally and are most vibrant in the spring and summer.

Starlight Stables and Mustang Sanctuary is grateful to announce that we are the recipient of a DAFgiving360 grant. We would like to give heartfelt thanks to the donor that made this possible. It means more to us than you can ever know.

We are honored to receive this grant in honor of the memory of equine advocate Catherine Kirby. Catherine Kirby was the founder and leader of one of our sister sanctuaries Noble Horse Sanctuary for many years. Sadly, in December Catherine lost her battle with cancer. We are indebted to the work Catherine did in the sanctuary community. We feel so appreciative of all of the volunteers at Noble Sanctuary and especially her husband Tim who has worked tirelessly to help us with infrastructure for our sanctuary.

Without grants like these and donations we would not be able to bring our dreams to reality. We are currently building infrastructure to allow us to save more horses. We plan to use this grant to help support Lady, a beautiful grey mustang that we adopted from Noble Sanctuary. Lady is approximately 30 years old and requires special medical and dietary care. This will also help us with costs from care for Santana who is recovering from a broken coffin bone and is Lady's favorite companion at our sanctuary.

Santana is Smitten...

Santana is a Ladies' man. The mares all love him and when we were deciding who would go in next to our new mare Lady we had a lot of thoughts, but Santana was still on stallrest with ground walking. Happy news! He has been cleared to go into an indoor/outdoor paddock by the vet and much to our excitement Lady was quite happy to have him next to her. So interesting that our 30 year old mare chose a 2 year old c**t, but she genuinely seems to like him. They spend a lot of time standing side by side but when Lady goes to eat, Santana stands at the fence like a lovesick boy...

Starlight Goes Driving

We had a great time last night at the USU Elevate Your Ride Clinic on Equine Driving. The instructors were fabulous! We learned a lot and enjoyed driving a team of Percherons and a team of Fjiords. It was great practice for ground driving as well which is part of our ready-to-saddle training in our horses that are on that pathway. We look forward to holding clinics like this in the future as our rescue grows. Do any of your drive your horses or plan to in the future?

Stardust & Shaman

Our little trio of two year olds is so adorable. It is hard to get photos of these two together because they both want affection and chase after you as soon as you back away. Aren't they adorable?
