🍂✨ LOOK UP THIS FALL: What can you find in the night sky? 🔭

Fall brings some incredible sights overhead, and over the next few weeks, we’re highlighting a few of our favorites to help you get outside, look up, and see what you can find! 🌌

First up: The Andromeda Galaxy (M31)! 🌠

About 2.5 million light-years away, Andromeda is the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way — and under dark skies, you can actually spot it with the naked eye as a faint, fuzzy patch of light! 👀✨

🔎 Want to find it? Start with the Great Square of Pegasus and follow the stars of Andromeda toward M31. Grab a pair of binoculars to reveal its hazy, elongated glow, or use a telescope for an even better look at its bright central core. 🔭

📸 Have you found Andromeda? Drop your photo in the comments below or tell us if you’ve spotted it with your own eyes!

🍂 Keep looking up — another fall night-sky find is coming soon! ✨🌌

☁️🌧️ StarQuest Observatory will be CLOSED tonight, 10/10/26, due to cloudy skies and a chance of rain.

The stars will still be there, and we’ll be ready to explore the universe with you when the skies clear! ✨🪐 Thanks for understanding, and keep looking up! 💫

📣 Stay tuned for our next stargazing adventure!

✨ SPOTLIGHT PHOTO OF THE WEEK ✨

Some views of the universe never get old. 🌌

This week, we’re revisiting one of the most iconic sights in the night sky — the Pillars of Creation!

Photographer Robert Osborn decided to take another look at data he captured about a year and a half ago and give it a fresh reprocessing. Using an 8” Celestron EdgeHD and just 50 minutes of collected data, he brought new life to this incredible region of the Eagle Nebula.

The Pillars are enormous columns of interstellar gas and dust where new stars are forming — a stellar nursery thousands of light-years from Earth. 🔭✨

What do you think of the reprocessed image? And have you ever seen the Eagle Nebula through a telescope? 👇

At this point, we’re starting to think Mother Nature has something against our Saturday night plans… 😅

Unfortunately, Star*Quest Observatory will be CLOSED tonight, September 19, due to rain, soggy ground conditions, and the Flood Watch.

🌙 International Observe the Moon Night ➡️ Rescheduled to September 26

🍔 Chat & Chew ➡️ Rescheduled to October 3

We know the clouds and rain have been testing everyone’s patience lately — ours included! But the Moon and stars aren’t going anywhere. 🌙✨ We’ll try again next weekend!

In the meantime… who else is ready for a CLEAR Saturday night?! 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️

🔭 Tonight’s forecast: 100% chance of telescope disappointment. ☁️😩

Star*Quest Observatory will be CLOSED tonight, 9-12-26.

Those wispy cirrus clouds high in the atmosphere might not look like much, but they’re enough to interfere with our telescope views and keep the stars out of sight tonight. 🌥️✨

The universe isn’t going anywhere, though! 🌌 We’ll be ready to welcome you back as soon as the skies cooperate.

🤞 Here’s hoping for clearer skies next time!

✨ Spotlight Photo of the Week 🌌

📸 Photographer: Dan Vranic

This week’s incredible image takes us about 1,200 light-years away to Barnard 150 (LDN 1082), a dark molecular cloud winding through the constellation Cepheus.

Made of dense, cold interstellar dust and gas, Barnard 150 blocks the light of the Milky Way’s background stars, creating the dramatic dark structure seen here. Hidden within are three dense cores—stellar nurseries where new low-mass stars are beginning to form. ⭐

Dan spent an incredible 52 HOURS of exposure time capturing this image under the pristine Bortle 1 skies at Starfront Observatories, making it his longest image to date!

🤯 To put that into perspective: Dan estimates achieving a comparable result from his Fort Wayne driveway would require nearly 2,100 hours of exposure. With roughly 60 clear nights per year in our area, that could mean around 8 YEARS of imaging from home!

An incredible amount of time, patience, and dark skies went into revealing what’s hiding in one of the “dark” regions of our Milky Way. 🔭✨

☀️🔭 Science, sunshine & a whole lot of fun at Taste of the Arts!

FWAS had an amazing time at the Taste of the Arts Festival STEAM Tent this past weekend! From getting an up-close look at the Sun through our telescopes to talking astronomy, space exploration, and everything in between, we loved sharing our passion for the universe with so many curious minds. 🌎✨

A HUGE thank you to everyone who stopped by our tent, asked questions, took a look through a telescope, and spent part of their day exploring with us. Seeing kids, families, and festival-goers light up over astronomy is exactly why we love doing what we do! 💫

And a special shoutout to our FWAS members and volunteers who showed up and helped make the day such a success! 🚀

Thanks for having us, — we already can’t wait for the next opportunity to bring astronomy out into the community! 🌞🔭

Were you at Taste of the Arts? Tell us your favorite part of the festival below! 👇

🌟 WE’RE OPEN TONIGHT! 🔭✨

Join us at Star*Quest Observatory from 9–11 PM tonight, September 5!

🌥️ The clouds may still be hanging around when we open, but don’t let that stop you — we’ve got a fun lineup planned while we wait for the skies to clear!

And the forecast is looking promising: partly cloudy, becoming clear! 🤞🌌 As the clouds move out, we’ll transition to observing the night sky through our telescopes.

Whether you’re a space enthusiast or just looking for something different to do on a Saturday night, come spend the evening exploring the universe with the Fort Wayne Astronomical Society!
