Each year, one walker is chosen to carry a flag in honor of a special cause. This year, we walked in memory of Brian Grady McDonnell, who was serving on Emergency Service Truck One on September 11th. When the call came, he ran toward the South Tower to help others escape—and he never returned.
At the conclusion of our 100-mile walk, we present the flag to the 9/11 Memorial, where it is flown over the site in the days that follow. This flag-folding ceremony has become a tradition we carry forward each year.
