Montana Association for the Blind The Montana Association for the Blind works to better the lives of blind and visually impaired Montanans.

The mission of the Montana Association for the Blind is to promote the social and economic self-sufficiency of blind and low-vision Montanans through the facilitation of quality education, learning, training, and employment services and opportunities and to foster a positive understanding of blindness. Our vision is of a Montana in which blindness is perceived and understood to be an ordinary and respectable part of life, and in which the skills and tools of blindness are readily available to all who may benefit from them. We envision an environment in which blind and low-vision Montanans have ample and equal opportunities to learn, to achieve, and to contribute to our homes, communities, state, and nation.

🎉 TODAY IS THE DAY! THE GREAT MONTANA WHITE CANE CHALLENGE BEGINS! 🎉

Today, October 15—White Cane Safety Day—the Montana Association for the Blind is launching an exciting statewide adventure!

We're sending a symbolic white cane on a 1,030-mile journey across Montana, from the Idaho border to the North Dakota border, stopping along the way to celebrate communities and MAB chapters.

Our goal? Raise $50,000 to support programs that help blind and low-vision Montanans build skills, confidence, and independence!

🚶 Every $50 donated moves our White Cane approximately ONE MILE across Montana!

Whether you give $10, $50, or $500, every contribution helps move us forward.

Will you help us get started?

❤️ A WHITE CANE IS MORE THAN A MOBILITY TOOL.

To someone who is blind or has low vision, a white cane can mean freedom.

The freedom to walk down the street, explore a new place, visit a friend, or simply go where you want to go—on your own terms.

A white cane helps its user detect obstacles, recognize changes in the ground, and navigate the world more safely.

But it can also represent something much greater: confidence, dignity, independence, and possibility.

For someone experiencing vision loss, learning to use a white cane can be a turning point. What may initially feel like a symbol of blindness can become a symbol of newfound freedom.

At the Montana Association for the Blind, we believe vision loss doesn't mean giving up the life you love. With training, encouragement, and opportunity, new possibilities open up.

A white cane doesn't tell the world where a blind person cannot go. It helps that person get where they choose to go.

Today, on White Cane Safety Day, we celebrate the independence that a simple white cane can represent.

Discover New Skills with MAB Programs
Are you interested in learning new skills or strengthening the independent living skills you already have? The Montana Association for the Blind (MAB) offers several programs designed to help individuals who are blind or have low vision gain confidence, independence, and community support.
1. Life Learner Retreat – Sponsored by the Bozeman Chapter of MAB
The Life Learner Retreat, held in Bozeman, offers a supportive and relaxed learning environment where participants can explore skills such as mobility, daily living skills, Braille, budgeting and financial skills, communication, games, and leisure activities.
Each retreat supports 3–6 participants and is offered once per month, allowing for individualized instruction and personal attention.
Upcoming retreat dates include:
October 18-23
November & December TBA - contact Todd for more info
A weekend retreat for couples is also being planned.
The cost is $500 for participants needing housing and $250 for those who do not require housing. Scholarships are available.
For more information, please contact Todd Fahlstrom at 406-600-7548.
2. Summer Orientation Program (SOP)
The Summer Orientation Program is an immersive and life-changing experience focused on building independence and confidence. During this month-long program, participants receive hands-on training in daily living skills, travel with the white cane, technology, Braille, low-vision tools, and much more. Instruction is provided by experienced teachers, many of whom are blind themselves and understand the journey of vision loss firsthand.
Beyond the practical skills, SOP offers something equally valuable—the opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences and to discover new possibilities for living fully and independently.
This year’s program will be held in Great Falls from mid-June through mid-July. Room, board, and all training are provided at no cost to participants.
For more information or to request an application, please contact Melanie at 406-442-9411.
3. Orientation Program Workshop (OPW) – Advanced Skills
This week-long workshop follows SOP and is designed for individuals who already have basic independent living skills and want to take those skills to the next level.
Classes will include Orientation and Mobility with an emphasis on community travel, Activities for Daily Living, and Technology training. Participants will practice their skills in real-world environments while gaining greater confidence and independence.
The workshop will take place in Great Falls, and room, board, and training are provided at no cost to participants.
For more information or to request an application, please contact Melanie at 406-442-9411.
