Like everything associated with the climate crisis, we are running out of time for urban forestry. Planting more trees in our cities will help address heat, storms and air pollution.

Happy National Arbor Day!

While National Arbor Day is celebrated the last Friday of April, Texas Arbor Day is actually celebrated the first Friday in November. Due to hotter summers in Texas, the best time to plant trees in the Lone Star State is between November and March.

Though we don’t recommend planting trees in Texas today, you can still be kind to your trees by making sure they are properly mulched for the summer to conserve water, reduce weeds and keep soil cooler. Apply no more than a 2 – 3 inch layer and do not pile it up against the tree trunk known as volcano mulching.

How are you kind to your trees?

About Million Trees El Paso

Million Trees El Paso is a program with an ambitious goal: to plant and care for at least one million new native trees across the city in the next 10 years! The goal is to restore the “tree canopy cover”—the area of land shaded by trees—in the Greater El Paso, TX region.

The tree canopy is the upper branches or crowns of mature trees. Measuring the area of land covered by tree canopy is an important yardstick for a healthy environment, since trees improve air and water quality, help reduce erosion, water pollution, and flooding, and reduces the heat on our streets, sidewalks, and buildings.

Environmental Benefits: Slow Global Climate Change, Improve Air Quality, Lower Summer Air Temperature, Natural Resource Conservation, and Wildlife Habitat.

Economic Benefits: High Return on Investment, Increased Property Values, Community and Commercial Business Appeal.
