Medlife UK

Medlife UK Email [email protected] to create/join a society. We work to provide Medicine, Education, & Development to Low Income Families Everywhere.

MEDLIFE was founded in 2005 by Nick Ellis as a University of Maine student group. Nick organized a medical mission to Cebadas, Ecuador. Upon returning home, he raised funds to provide surgery for a young boy the mission had encountered. Since our inception, we’ve expanded to new schools, refined the Mobile Clinic structure and created the MEDLIFE Fund to engage in more sustainable forms of aid. ME

DLIFE currently operates in Ecuador, Peru and Tanzania. In each country, MEDLIFE staff seek out the poorest of the poor. The hardships faced by our patients and communities vary from country to country: In Lima, MEDLIFE works in a community on the outskirts of the city where 20,000 people are designated to a single doctor for their primary care needs. In Ecuador, MEDLIFE works with villages where access to a hospital or emergency medical services are essentially nonexistent during heavy rains.

"Spending time in the communities on Development Projects and Medical Clinics allowed me to speak to both members of the community and the professionals to gain a good understanding of both the culture and the daily challenges that poverty inflicts on millions of people. For me, the impact of MEDLIFE’s work in the communities of Lima powerfully demonstrated how mutual respect and cooperation between NGO’s and impoverished areas is fundamental to facilitate development and to break down the constraints of poverty. I know it sounds cliché but it was honestly the most amazing, challenging and eye-opening experience I’ve ever had.”

"The MEDLIFE Internship in Lima, Peru was a fulfilling and highly enjoyable experience. I appreciated the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals and a movement that is passionate about making a positive difference and improving the living standards of the disadvantaged.
As a medical student, I have a keen interest in working to ensure access to good healthcare for all globally.
Working with local doctors, dentists and nurses in the mobile clinics gave me the opportunity to work towards this goal.
The internship was eye-opening and enriching – I am incredibly thankful to have had the opportunity to be involved."

- Arka Banerjee, 1st Year Medic, University of Cambridge

Over the last three weeks, 20 UK students worked with MEDLIFE's community development team in the human settlements on the outskirts of Lima, Peru.

We ran mobile health clinics, built staircases, visited patients in our follow-up program, hosted a women's health workshop, and heard from government officials and UN workers, among other activities.

The students also learnt about the issues faced by our partner communities, and the key role MEDLIFE societies play in improving their access to healthcare, education and a safe home.

A huge thank you to our interns:

Kevin - Aston University | Amy & Jess - Birmingham City University | Karyshma - Imperial College London | Annum & Sara - King's College London | Halima - Middlesex University | Frieda - Oxford Brookes University | Linda & Tyffany - University College London | Arka & Jack - University of Cambridge | Aida - University of Chichester | Sophia - University of Exeter | Lolu & Xenia - University of Liverpool | Paul - University of Manchester | Hajar & Rosa - University of Oxford | Jasmin - University of Warwick

Thank you for your positive energy and hard work over the last couple of weeks Frieda, Halima, Jasmin, Jess, Lolu, Tyffany and Xenia.

Here are some photos from the week so far: visiting the police station in Pamplona Alta; meeting with the mayor of Villa Maria del Triunfo; building a staircase and participating in a women’s health workshop.
