Good afternoon, LU Greek Life Community.
For the past three weeks, I have held virtual and or phone call conversations with governing council presidents, a representative sample of chapter presidents, campus advisors, and chapter advisors to determine a future advising model for the Greek Life community. Through the course of these conversations, I spoke with over 40+ individuals and collected a wealth of information from you. I want to personally thank you for your participation and thoughtful, honest, and insightful conversations with me.
With over five pages of feedback and comments, I heard several resounding remarks that each council has unique, essential needs that require individualized attention. To this end, I have decided to establish a new Greek Life Advisors Council that will consist of a dedicated advisor(s) for each governing council. Starting today, Friday, June 12th, the following individuals will serve on this new advisors council in their respective role:
Governing Councils:
CPC - Ms. Morgan Pulliam, Council Advisor & Ms. Sara Margaret Gubala, CPC Recruitment Advisor & Support
Morgan Pulliam is the Coordinator for Student Engagement in the Setzer Student Center. She is a first-generation college student and has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Stephen F. Austin State University, and a Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of Arkansas. She loves the State of Texas and working at Lamar.
Sara Gubala is an instructor in political science, where she has worked since 2008. She loves presidential politics and elections and spends a lot of time analyzing public opinion polls and encouraging students to get registered and to vote. Sara has two dogs Kennedy and Reagan who are certified therapy dogs as well as certified crisis response dogs and when they are not furloughed from volunteering, they enjoy bringing joy to Baptist Hospital, the Beaumont Children’s Museum and Rose Place Assisted Living as well as helping students at Lamar through final exams. Sara is no stranger to Greek life, she is a Chi Omega, a member of Order of Omega, and has been active in Greek life as a faculty adviser here at Lamar. She loves sorority recruitment and has assisted with this for most of her years at Lamar. She has received numerous awards in the community for her service and is a past recipient of the Julie and Ben Rogers Community Service Award, Lamar University Student Organization Advisor of the Year, and Lamar University Greek Campus Advisor of the Year, and has also been an Aces Fellow.
Greek Council & IFC - Mr. Canaan Daniels, Council Advisor
Canaan Daniels, Associate Director for Programming and Events, Setzer Student Center came to Lamar in May 2019. Originally from Wi******er, Illinois, he earned a Bachelor of Social Work from Western Illinois University in 2014 and a Master of Science in College Student Affairs from Eastern Illinois University in 2016. Canaan came from Stephen F. Austin State University, where he spent three years advising their programming board and overseeing experiential learning opportunities for student organizations. Canaan is also an involved member of the National Association for Campus Activities, where he currently serves as the Student Projects Team Lead for the Central Region. At Lamar, Canaan now oversees the Cardinals Activities Board, Student Tailgate, & Homecoming events for students. He currently resides on the west end of Beaumont with his three dogs and his wife Reba, who also works for Lamar as the Coordinator for Cardinal Communities.
MGC - Dr. Terry Mena, Council Advisor & Ms. Maegan Collins, Advisor & Support
Terry Mena is associate vice president and dean of students at Lamar University.
Maegan Collins is an Instructor of Political Science at Lamar University. Before becoming a faculty member, Ms. Collins served as an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising and as a Career Consultant. As an undergraduate, Ms. Collins was a very involved student leader and member of Alpha Delta Pi. Ms. Collins has been the faculty advisor for Delta Xi Nu and Kappa Delta Chi for over two years.
NPHC - Dr. Freddie Titus, Council Advisor
Dr. Titus has served as NPHC Advisor with distinction and provides guidance to the student leaders of four sororities and four fraternities on the LU campus, helping them “develop leadership across campus,” he said. “The impact of developing leaders results in increased academic achievement and involvement across campus.” Dr. Titus has also served as faculty advisor to Student Government Association, receiving Faculty Advisor of the Year Recognition, 1998-2010, and in 2013. He was also honored as a Living Legend in Recognition of Outstanding Leadership in 2015 by the ExxonMobil Black Employee Success Team. He has a B.S. in mathematics and industrial engineering from Lamar University. He also holds a Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from McNeese State University and an Ed.D. in curriculum and instruction - math education from The University of Houston. Dr. Titus is a proud founder and director of the Psalm 150 Gospel Choir and the Psalm 150 Youth and Young Adult Retreat.
Student Organization:
Order of Omega – Mrs. Marie Murray
Marie Murray, Asst. Director of Health Education Services, Student Health Center has been at Lamar University for the past five years. She graduated from the University of Connecticut with a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences, where she also became a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi. Marie followed her passion and graduated from Baylor University with a Masters in Public Health. In recent years, Marie has actively worked with the LU Greek Community to provide support and in the past year became a Greek organization campus advisor. Marie also works to support the Beaumont community through her membership in the Junior League of Beaumont. Marie currently lives in Silsbee with her husband, a SETX native, and two dogs.
Mr. Todd Shaver and members of the Setzer Student Center staff will continue to assist and provide support to the new Greek Life Advisors.
