"Knowledge is that which liberates"

An education based on Hindu thought involving ethics, and self-reflection. www.hua.edu

Hindu University of America (HUA) was established in 1989 and was authorized in 1993 to provide students with a unique academic environment to explore the knowledge systems rooted in and emerging from Vedic thought i.e. the philosophies, traditions, culture, and civilization that has come to be called Hinduism in the popular imagination. Hindu University of America welcomes all qualified students

seeking to pursue knowledge and understanding, personal and societal transformation, as well as research and publication, in many diverse areas of study. Those who already have exposure to Hinduism through their own heritage will find the university to be an excellent source to acquire an enhanced understanding of their identity, culture and its unique world-view, while newcomers to Hindu thought will find a thorough and accessible introduction to a seemingly esoteric way of life that is simultaneously both ancient and contemporary. The university strives to explore the knowledge systems of Vedic origin encompassed by the term Hinduism in conversation, with contemporary challenges and opportunities facing humanity, in realms such as religion and theology, natural, human social sciences, economics and politics, education, the fine arts and literature, and more.

You keep doing the work.

You show up, you give your best, you carry your responsibilities, and still your mind keeps asking one question:

“What will I get from this?”

That is exactly where the Bhagavad Gita meets you.

“कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन” is not telling you to stop caring. It is telling you not to lose yourself in the outcome.

Because the moment your peace depends only on results, success controls you, failure breaks you, and action becomes anxiety.

Sri Krishna’s teaching is simple, but not easy:

Do the work that is yours to do.
Offer your best.
Let the result arrive without making it your identity.

You are not only what you achieve.
You are not only what you receive.
You are not only what succeeds or fails.

You are the one who acts with clarity, discipline, and dharma.

That is where Karma Yoga begins.

Every June 21, millions practice Yoga.

Many may not realize that Patañjali's Yoga Sūtras contain 196 aphorisms — and only one of them describes physical posture.
Yoga Sūtra 2.46: Sthirasukham āsanam -- "posture should be stable and comfortable." That is the full instruction. One line.

The preceding 100+ sūtras address the nature of consciousness, the mechanics of suffering (kleśa), the distinction between the seer and the seen, and the methodology of liberation (kaivalya).

What the world calls "Yoga" today is a single sentence from a system of extraordinary philosophical depth.

Sanātana Dharma gave the world this system. Its own inheritors deserve to understand it in full.

Most people think Haṭha Yoga means stretching.
The word tells a different story entirely.

Ha: the solar current, Prāṇa, the upward-moving life force.
Tha: the lunar current, Apāna, the downward-moving force.

Haṭha Yoga is the disciplined union of these two opposing forces within the body. Not flexibility training. A complete system for bringing the body's energy currents into alignment so that the mind can become still enough for deeper practice.

This is what the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā, the foundational 15th-century text of this tradition, composed by Svātmārāma, establishes from its very first chapter. The āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, mudrās, and bandhas are not ends in themselves. They are a systematic preparation for Rāja Yoga and ultimately Samādhi.

Yes, the physical benefits are real: improved flexibility, functional strength, better breathing, postural correction, stress reduction, sustained energy, and a genuine settling of the mind. These are documented and significant.

But they are byproducts of a practice aimed at something far more complete than physical fitness.

HUA's Haṭha Yoga course is taught within this full traditional context, not extracted from it.

Public conversations today often treat varṇa, jāti, and “caste” as if they are interchangeable—but this conflation has led to widespread misunderstanding, distortion, and confusion.

In this timely and thought-provoking webinar, we revisit these foundational concepts through a more careful and historically grounded lens. What did varṇa and jāti originally mean within the Hindu civilizational framework? How and when did the modern idea of the “caste system” emerge? And what are the consequences—intellectual, social, and cultural—of continuing to collapse these distinct ideas into a single narrative?

Guided by Kalyan Viswanathan, President of the Hindu University of America, this session will unpack the evolution of these terms across indigenous and colonial frameworks, highlighting how Western categories reshaped the global understanding of Hindu society.

More than a historical discussion, this webinar invites participants into a deeper process of intellectual clarity and decolonization—equipping them to engage confidently with one of the most debated and misunderstood topics in Hindu studies today.

Join us as we move beyond confusion toward clarity—and continue the larger samvāda on how Hindu knowledge traditions are understood in the modern world.Kalyan Viswanathan

Śrī Rudram stands as one of the most powerful and revered hymns of the Vedas—yet its depth is rarely fully understood.

At the heart of Śrī Rudram lies the Namaka Praśna, a profound invocation that repeatedly offers salutations (namaḥ) to Rudra in His many forms—revealing a vision of the Divine that pervades all existence, from the cosmic to the everyday.

In this focused and immersive webinar, we turn our attention specifically to the Namaka Praśna of Śrī Rudram—not just as a chant, but as a doorway into Vedic insight, devotion, and disciplined practice.

Participants will also gain clarity on how the Namaka Praśna forms the foundation for deeper study—including the Chamaka Praśna, which builds upon it and is explored in the next stage of learning.

Rooted in the Vedas and preserved through an unbroken oral tradition, Śrī Rudram is not merely recited—it is realized through dedicated practice. This webinar offers a rare opportunity to approach it with both reverence and understanding.

Whether you are new to Vedic chanting or looking to deepen your engagement with Śrī Rudram, this session will help you take a meaningful first step into one of the most sacred and transformative expressions of Vedic knowledge. Sree Aswath

Most people who practice Yoga have never read Yoga Sūtra 2.31.

It comes right after Patañjali lists the five Yamas -- Ahiṃsā, Satya, Asteya, Brahmacarya, Aparigraha -- and it says:
जातिदेशकालसमयानवच्छिन्नाः सार्वभौमाः महाव्रतम्

Jāti-deśa-kāla-samayā-navacchinnāḥ sārvabhaumāḥ mahāvratam

"Not limited by class, place, time, or circumstance -- these are the universal Great Vow."

Patañjali is unambiguous: the Yamas are unconditional. They do not have exceptions for stressful days, difficult people, or inconvenient situations.

This is the ethical architecture that precedes every āsana, every prāṇāyāma, every meditative state described in the Yoga Sūtras. The physical and meditative practices of Yoga rest on this foundation -- or they do not stand at all.

The five cards above introduce each Yama. HUA teaches them in their original depth.
