Ruckersville Volunteer Fire Company, INC. We are a 100% volunteer fire company located in the Ruckersville area of Greene County, VA. The first Chief Officers in 1948 were N.S.

In the late summer, early fall of 1947, a huge fire broke out in the small town of Ruckersville, Virginia. The only two businesses that were in Ruckersville at the time were "Lindsey Garage" and "CC Jennings Gulf Station". When you have a big fire especially in a small town, it will naturally draw a lot of attention. It wasn't until after this fire that members of the community decided that there was a need for a local fire department. In the months following 1948, the Ruckersville Volunteer Fire Company (RVFC) was formed. Lindsey - Chief and Otis Haney - Assistant Chief. Company Officers:
Chief - Enoch Hord
Assistant Chief - Cameron Hord
Captain - Matthew Hildebrand
Lieutenant - Chase Lawhorne
Lieutenant - Andrew McDaniel

Greene County Agencies Respond to Barn Fire

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, Greene County emergency response agencies responded to a reported barn fire in the 6000 block of Celt Road.

First and foremost, Greene County extends our sincere condolences to the property owner and those affected by this devastating fire. We understand the loss associated with an event like this, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted.

We also recognize the concern within our community regarding the emergency response and the timeline of events. Because there has been information circulating on social media that does not accurately reflect the verified response timeline, we believe it is important to provide the community with the facts documented in our emergency response records.

Here is the verified timeline:

• 4:40:27 p.m. | The Greene County Emergency Communications Center received the initial 911 call reporting a barn fire, with the caller advising that smoke and flames were visible.

• 4:41:31 p.m. | The call was dispatched to the appropriate fire and emergency response agencies; approximately one minute after the initial 911 call was received.

• 4:43 p.m. | The first fire unit from Stanardsville Volunteer Fire Company responded.

• 4:44 p.m. | Mutual aid requested due to the location of the barn and the absence of nearby fire hydrants, requiring additional resources for water supply and fire suppression operations.

• 4:51 p.m. | The first fire unit arrived on scene.

Emergency incidents are dynamic, and information shared online during or immediately following an incident may not accurately reflect the actual sequence or timing of events. We encourage residents to rely on official information and verified response records when evaluating an emergency response.

This incident involved a coordinated response from numerous local and regional agencies. Greene County sincerely appreciates the men and women who responded, including:

Smoke from the ongoing Canadian wildfires has moved into our area, resulting in hazy skies and reduced air quality across Greene County. Air quality alerts have been issued in parts of Virginia as wildfire smoke continues to impact the region.

For your health and safety, we encourage everyone to:
• Stay indoors as much as possible until air quality improves.
• Keep windows and doors closed.
• Run your air conditioning on recirculate if available.
• Limit strenuous outdoor activity, especially if you notice smoke or haze.

These precautions are especially important for:
• Children
• Older adults
• Pregnant women
• Anyone with asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions

Before spending extended time outdoors, check the current air quality conditions using the links below:

Additional waves of smoke from Ontario, Canada wildfires will push south into the area through Friday. This will create hazy conditions with diminished air quality. An Air Quality Alert is in effect today for the Norfolk and Richmond metro areas and the lower Maryland Eastern Shore.

Smoke could get pushed farther down toward the surface later in the week, resulting in diminished visibility in haze and possible additional air quality restrictions.
