Although National POW/MIA Recognition Day was observed yesterday, September 18, our recognition may be delayed—but our promise to remember never will be.

Today, we honor the American prisoners of war who endured unimaginable hardship, those who returned home carrying the lasting effects of captivity, and the service members who remain missing and unaccounted for.

We also remember the families who have lived with unanswered questions, enduring hope, and an empty place that time cannot fill.

May God comfort these families, strengthen those who returned home, and watch over every American hero who has not yet made the journey home.

You are not forgotten. You will never be forgotten.

Today, we honor Firefighter Joe Flake of the Wellston Fire Department in Wellston, Oklahoma, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

We ask God to surround Firefighter Flake’s family with His strength, comfort, and peace as they face this unimaginable loss. We also lift up the Wellston Fire Department and his fellow firefighters who mourn the loss of one of their own.

May our nation never forget those who answer the call to serve, placing the lives of others before their own.
