Mercury and Venus will glow low near the horizon, while Jupiter and Saturn will shine brighter higher up. Uranus and Neptune may require binoculars or a small telescope. TOO COOL

We are not riding next week as I will be out of town. Craig will keep things rolling at home. See you all the week of 3-8. Too early for this much heat. Sunday, Craig was working on “whacking” the w**ds by the horse pens, so I decided to take a hike to the power line road in preparation (and as a test) for my trip next week to Antelope Canyon. Monday Spirit and I had a good ride and workout in the arena. Craig helped with some testing to see how she responded to a horse leader while the rider was squeezing their legs and doing various balance challenges. She did very well. Jason came out and pulled the shoes off of Liber-T as they were not doing what we wanted and needed to go. She is doing very much better now. There was a nice sunset to end the day. Tuesday I prepped the arena for class. Ellie and Karen arrived and got Spirit and Liber-T out. Karen did a great job warming Spirit up and riding her. Ellie played with Liber-T, who was very happy to be barefoot once again. Dori came and mounted up - for the first time - on Spirit. They did very well together working on various riding patterns. Natalie arrived and mounted up on Liber-T. She played with stopping in the hoop, bean bag tossing, jousting and puzzles - all while working on guiding Liber-T. Meanwhile, Karen got back on Spirit for another nice ride. Cayden came and got busy doing ground games with Spirit. He then mounted up and worked on his reining skills, jousting, stopping at targets and weaving cones. Not to miss out, Ellie hopped back on Liber-T. Both enjoyed the ride. Great riding everyone. Wednesday was paperwork day, partly because it needed to be done and partly because w**d whacking was happening near horse play areas. We had a nice sunset to enjoy. Thursday Liber-T and I had a great ride. We pulled those corrective shoes on Tuesday and she is PERFECT. So I took the chance to ride my friend. Another pretty sunset ended our Thursday and still another on Friday. Saturday, Cat arrived first with her granddaughters, Bethany and Emily. Then Lisa, Saanvi and Smitha came. A full house. Chores got done, Liber-T and Spirit were prepared for class and we headed to the arena. Lisa got Spirit ready, Smitha and Cat got Liber-T ready while the rest of us set up the arena. After both horses got ridden a bit, we let the girls ride. They will have sore smiling muscles this evening. Nice job everyone. Charleigh and Rhett came for their class. Charleigh groomed Liber-T, while Rhett got Spirit all shined up. They then took their horses around to see where everything was before mounting up. Charleigh did her positions very well and Rhett wanted to do positions as well - especially backwards. Charleigh practiced using reins to stop, go over hill and jousting. Rhett also worked on his reining, hill riding and jousting. They ended with a nice trail ride. Kaleb came and got on Liber-T very easily today, requiring less and less support. He started with pushing passenger, which really gets his core loosened up. He then did arm raises. We asked for very slow, then faster and got some nice smooth movement. This was so good, we kept up on it and added clapping hands and raising both arms at once. He did the shape puzzle, used the reins well to stop Liber-T in the hoop. WOW a great ride today. The girls got a chance to learn about cleaning pens before riding, grooming after riding, putting horses away, feeding grain and setting up grain for tomorrow. COOL! Saturday evening gave us a nice sunset at the end of the day. Sunday was not windy, they quite gusty, then not windy. AARG! So decided not to ride Gracie, but did take her to the arena and worked on line with touch it, transitions from trot to walk at the barrels, sideways over a cone, ground pole and without a fence. Very very nice workout even though the gusting was gusting. Later worked with Craig on pulling weeks out of the arena. Monday, my hands and back are talking to me after pulling weeks. So after chores, I pulled even more weeks along the west fence to create a fire block since the whole desert is full of waist high w**ds. It was even more windy in the afternoon, so stayed inside out of the dust and worked on the computer. Later, we did have a pretty sunset. Tuesday, it rained most of the early morning from 11 PM Monday to about 4 AM and we got ½". Everything is very squishy, more rain and lots of wind predicted. Very brisk and cold out, so canceled class as I wouldn’t ride in these conditions. It was raining at 2:30, so very glad I decided to cancel class. Wednesday was also a very cool and windy day. We got ½" of rain very early in the morning and things were very wet. Add the wind and it was quite cold. Another nice sunset was given to make up for the cold and damp day. Thursday dawned sunny, but cool - well for us cold. It was 27 on our porch at 8 AM. BURRR. After chores, I did office work and headed out in the early afternoon to see who I could play with. The wind was blowing quite a bit making it very raw, the pen was still a smidge wet causing it to be a bit slippery and the ground was still somewhat squishy. So didn’t want to ride but did some ground play with the horses. Got Spirit on line and worked to help her extend her walk while on a circle. It’s sure coming. Didn’t want the horses to go faster as a slip could pull those old and cold muscles. Saturday was a bit warmer - well 32 on the porch at 7:30 AM. It was breezy even though it did warm up some. Lisa, Smitha and Craig, were my helpers today. They got the horse chores done and got the horses ready while I put the equipment out and fed the horses their hay. Just for fun Smitha got to play with Spirit while Lisa got Liber-T ready. Nice ground work for both. Smitha then mounted up on Spirit - for the first time - with Lisa helping. She had a very good ride. Just love her smiles - all the time. Lisa then mounted up on Spirit and got to ride some as well. Charleigh and Rhett arrived and we got started with usual tasks - some grooming and explore what was out and about around the arena. Charleigh mounted up on Liber-T and Rhett got on Spirit. Charleigh practiced walk and whoa as well as using reins to turn. She rode over the hill a couple of times, did well with the shape puzzles and a pretty good job jousting. Rhett also worked on reining and riding to target cones to place rings. He did a nice job jousting and rode over the hill as well. He asked about doing a trail ride. So off they went to ride the home trail. Kaleb arrived and did a very nice mount on Liber-T. He rode in pushing passenger position a couple of rounds to help allow his body flexibility to move with Liber-T. He then worked on quietly raising 1 arm at a time up and down in rhythm. It was very good. He did the peg puzzle with us moving the pieces around to challenge his picking them up. We didn’t do a lot of different things allowing good progress. He did the best dismount yet getting off of Liber-T. I, unfortunately, was busy close to the action and didn’t get any pictures to share. BUT - his mom, Maria, got the chance to ride Spirit just a bit.

Happy Valentine’s Day. OMG - - - We got an e-mail from Christa of VGM Goup saying we were chosen to receive a donation from them. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Presentation will be next week. Sunday was sure a warm one, but I got Gracie out for a play time. After playing in the pen on line and riding a bit in the back area, we headed to the arena. She has a lot of energy - considering she’s 10 years younger than Dakota or Spirit and almost 20 years younger than Liber-T. After doing some circles and point to point, she settled into a very VERY nice forward walk. I asked for trotting and she was quiet and steady. Her challenge - truly understanding what “whoa” is. Not as soft as we want, but it’s coming. Monday I took Spirit out and worked in the arena on line. Her riding is good, but her ground work still needs improvement. Every time we play, she gets better and better - for me. Anyone want to come and play with her to help her understand good ground work from everyone. Tuesday, only Ellie was able to come help. Of course Craig was here to give assistance when needed. Craig and I set up the arena and got chores done. Ellie got Liber-T ready and did a nice warm-up riding with 1 rein today. Dori came and did a very organized mount on Liber-T. She was in charge the whole ride and did lots of different riding patterns to work on her balance and coordination while riding. Natalie was next for Liber-T. She enjoys just riding, but also did bean bag tossing, stopping in the hoop and jousting. Both she and Liber-T were ready to finish at the end of their time together. Wednesday, we had a service call in Scottsdale, so no time to play with the horses. Thursday was a nice day, so got Spirit out for a ride. I continue to work on circles, changing stride length at a walk, trotting, backed between the barrels and out of the arena - when asked. She’s starting to lengthen her stride which takes a long time to stretch out the muscles and tendons to accomplish that. I believe she was always kept at a short walk considering her previous owners challenges. Friday evening we almost got a nice sunset, but not quite. DARN! Saturday since none of the usual volunteers were able to come, the Tuesday gals stepped up and came out to help. Cat, Ellie and Margie arrived and got Liber-T and Spirit ready. Margie warmed up Spirit and Ellie warmed up Liber-T. Oliver arrived and he got to work with his ground games with Liber-T. After mounting up, he did point to point, stop in the hoop, weaving the cones and tossing bean bags. Nice ride today. Meanwhile, Margie gave Cat a riding lesson on Spirit. Nice job you two. Woodrow was next and mounted up on Spirit. He did positions to start, then used neck rope for “whoa” at targets. Nice placing shape pieces today, did some bean bag tossing and very much enjoyed playing with the small hula hoop - up and over his head and Ellie’s and Margie’s. Kaleb came and got to work on the hitching rail doing squats, lift his knees and side to side. Mounted, he started with pushing passenger, raised his arm up and down in rhythm (still working on the rhythm part), alternating arms, clapping. He did the shape puzzle very well and worked on using the reins for whoa, squeeze legs for walk on and even started some weaving cones. Nice ride.

Sunday was windy again, so decided to give Dakota a body work session with red light, Equine Touch and stretching. Also played with Gracie at liberty strengthening her maintain trot gait around the pen. She’s getting it and moving well. Monday, I did body work on Dakota. A sunset gave us a nice end to the day. Tuesday was windy - it was quiet then very gusty and I only had 2 volunteers able to come. So, for safety of riders I canceled class. I did go out and play with both Gracie and Spirit even though it was gusty. It helps when windy to work on improve connection and draw when at liberty, as the trees blowing around pulls their attention. So working in windy conditions can strengthen the connection and improve their attention on what we are doing. Both are doing well. The ground work is so helpful in getting connection and even though they are not being ridden, ground work improves their ridden work. Go Figure ! Wednesday, Jason came and trimmed and floated teeth on all but Dakota. He did some body work, he has more training than I do, on her and will be back to float her teeth and trim her. She was very tight in her shoulder and neck, and he was sable to released it some. Hopefully that will help her. Friday we had another nice sunset to enjoy. Saturday, Lisa and Smitha were our volunteers - Craig also helped. They got chores done and horses ready. Smitha took Liber-T and Lisa took Spirit. Oliver was here early, so got right to work. On line he is getting his friendly lean rope toss more fluid, he practiced driving Liber-T to points and to stop in the hoop. Swinging the lead still needs better focus so Liber-T knows what he wants. Mounted up he practiced reining and rode around the circle of cones, with a final stop - with hind feet - in the hoop. Woodrow came and got right on Spirit. He was sitting up so well today and work hard doing positions, shape puzzles and bean bags. He played with the small hoop raising it over his head, on his head and then put it over Lisa and Smitha. Fun with lots of smiles. Good holding the neck rope to ask for whoa also. Charleigh and Rhett arrived and did a bit of grooming on Liber-T and Spirit. They checked out the arena and mounted up to explore more. Rhett is working on his reining to the right and left, stopping at cones and stopping to do jousting. Charleigh also is working on reining, did peg puzzle quickly and did some jousting as well. Kaleb arrived and mounted up on Liber-T. He started with pushing passenger, raising hands one at a time - in rhythm - then alternating. Trying to isolate movement, he worked to stabilize his back while picking up his arm. Tough stuff on a moving horse. He put hands on shoulders, used the hoop to equalize hands and finished up asking for whoa every 10 steps. He was very tired when we finished.

Both Sunday and Monday were cold and started windy. I gave Dakota a full body work to see if I could figure out if she has sore shoulders, front legs, or feet. Didn’t figure it out as she didn’t flinch as I worked on her, but she enjoyed the treatment. Monday, cool again but wind subsided a bit by afternoon, so I just took Liber-T out for a walk in the desert. Didn’t ride, just had a walk with my friend - it was very nice. Tuesday, Catherine, Everleigh and Ellie came and we got Liber-T and Spirit out. Everleigh did a great job warming up Spirit while Ellie played with Liber-T to get her ready for riders. Dori arrived and mounted up - best mount yet. She took total control and asked Liber-T to work in the arena. I taught her pushing passenger to connect her body with Liber-T’s movement, then showed her neutral rein, which takes your horse “out of gear” if going too fast for you. She went over the hill, weaving, circles and stop in the hoop. All was going so very well, it was time for a trail ride. Dori on Liber-T with Everleigh leading riding Spirit. The smiles from both gals were wonderful. Natalie arrived and got busy riding Liber-T. She did her usual warm-up and out to the trail. Start, stop, turns, play with shape puzzles. Meanwhile, Catherine played with Spirit on line and mounted up. She did learn Spirit is very VERY interested in eating the w**ds on the east end of the arena. OOPS. Our desert horses almost NEVER get to eat growing greenery and can be very pushy when it’s around. YIKES ! We gave Everleigh and Catherine a wellness ride at the end of the day. Wednesday, I played with Gracie in the pen and in the arena on line. Craig was - THANK YOU HONEY - w**d whacking the arena w**ds and it just wasn’t a good plan for riding there. Gracie took a bit to understand to maintain gait in the pen at a trot - at liberty. She finally gave me about 5 circles without stopping. So off to the arena to play some more. Asked for - and got - touch the barrels when circling, go from trot to walk at the barrels, step on the spot, and very nice sideways. Thursday was quite windy until mid afternoon, so couldn’t ride. Saturday was not as cold - only 42 on the porch. Lisa, Saanvi and Smitha arrived and got chores done. New volunteer Mell came and we got Gracie, Liber-T and Spirit out to play. Lisa played with Gracie who was very forward and happy to be out, Smitha played with Liber-T and Saanvi played with Spirit. Mell helped me set up the arena. Oliver arrived and got busy doing ground games with Liber-T. He asked her to stop in the hoop quite well and is getting his lead rope swing over back more fluid. Mounted, he worked on his reining a bit and then did a trail ride, which everyone enjoys. Back in the arena he worked on weaving cones, jousting, stop in the hoop and go over cavaletti. We had a break. Gracie was quite up and didn’t want to stand earlier for Lisa to ride, so I played with her a bit having her walk circles, transition from walk to trot to walk, 180 turns and stay with me. She seemed ready, so Lisa mounted up and did a great job riding. Mell got the chance to ride Spirit and enjoyed getting acquainted with her. Charleigh and Rhett arrived. Charleigh started with grooming Liber-T while Rhett worked with Spirit. They took their horses around to see what was out before mounting up. Charleigh did her positions - after going over the hill - and worked on the puzzles, jousting, asking for whoa and starting to use reins to turn. Rhett also worked on his reining, whoa and go, jousting, and practicing turns. Nice work today. Kaleb arrived early, so I put him to work at the hitching rail. Touch and go stand/sit/stand, lift knees, swing legs back and sideways. Nice. Mounted up, he did pushing passenger to get organized with Liber-T’s movement. He did well raising hands/arms up. Even clapped overhead and put both hands on shoulders - at a standstill, not ready for movement - - - yet. He used reins to ask for whoa and started to ask for turns while weaving cones. We gave his friend a wellness ride afterwards. Nice ride day today.
