LGBT Asylum Task Force 🌈⛪ Dedicated nonprofit ministry supporting the new beginnings and rights of LGBTQ asylum seekers in the U.S.

through housing, financial aid, legal connections, mentorship, and emotional support. The Le***an, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Asylum Task Force is a community-based organization of volunteers dedicated to supporting and empowering LGBT individuals who are seeking asylum or refuge in the United States. Founded in June 2008, our founding goal and continuing mission is to support the basic

human needs of LGBT people seeking asylum in the United States. We strive to provide/find/facilitate: housing, food, clothing, resources (ex. health care, psychological care, faith communities), cellphones (vital for contact with lawyers & family), and transportation. Our secondary goal is to educate the public in an effort to change policy around the globe so that someday no LGBT person will need to seek asylum because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and the need to find a safe place. Task Force volunteers have raised money and sourced donations to support more than 100 individuals during their asylum-seeking process.

A divided federal appeals court on Friday rejected President Donald Trump’s effort to unilaterally bar migrants who cross the US-Mexico border from seeking asylum, teeing up a likely showdown over the policy at the Supreme Court.

LET ASYLUM SEEKERS WORK

The rights to asylum and work permits are under attack ... again.

They have proposed changes to work permit access for asylum seekers that will make them more vulnerable to various forms of exploitation. These will come into effect after April 24, 2026.

It's an uphill climb, but we are hopeful that we can stop them before they do more harm to the community.

About 100 folks attended our recent community town hall with U.S. Representative Congressman Jim McGovern. They heard directly from asylum seekers, the congressman, and attorney Randy Feldman (Law Office of Randy Feldman) about the impact of the proposed changes and how we could fight back.

Folks walked away from the town hall with two things: a renewed drive to speak up for those whose voices might not reach as far, and hope from the groundswell of support from others ready to join us in this fight.

You are needed to call members of Congress, comment on the Federal Register website, and continue to spread the word. Can we count on you?

A couple weeks ago, we welcomed over 300 supporters to our Gala 2025 fundraiser. Together, we were able to raise more than $85,000 towards providing shelter and support for LGBTQ asylum seekers.

Thank you Ricardo Martinez (GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders - GLAD Law) for bringing your message of hope and resilience during this period.

Special thanks to our hardworking volunteers, donors, and sponsors who have all chosen to stand up for our community at a time when many others are cowering.

The Gala is always unforgettable — from powerful asylum seeker stories to lively auctions and entertainment.

This year will be no exception.

🏳️‍🌈 We’re honored to welcome Ricardo Martinez (he/him), Executive Director of GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders - GLAD Law, as our keynote speaker.

A first-generation immigrant from Mexico, Ricardo has been a national leader in LGBTQ+ advocacy, honored by the Obama Administration as an emerging LGBTQ leader and recognized by Stony Brook University’s 40 Under 40 for his impact in civil service and activism.

🌈 We’re equally thrilled to have Poppy Champlin (she/her) as our auctioneer.

A veteran comic with credits including SHOWTIME, LOGO, Oprah, and Entertainment Tonight, Poppy was inducted into the Rhode Island Comedy Hall of Fame and recently won Best Comedian at the 2024 Ladies of Laughter competition in New York.

As it did for many, the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult for us to host our 2020 and 2021 Gala fundraisers in person. But, we overcame and developed two years of beautifully produced virtual events with the help of our dedicated staff and volunteers.
