Thinking about adding a furry family member this holiday season? There's something important to remember.

A free kitten or puppy may sound like a wonderful deal, but the cost of bringing that pet home is only the beginning of the financial commitment.

Food, vaccinations, spay/neuter, preventative care, and unexpected veterinary bills all come with pet ownership.

Before bringing home a pet—whether it costs $500, $50, or absolutely nothing—please make sure you're prepared to provide the care that animal needs for a lifetime.

A pet may be free. Their care isn't.

VCA can help people who can't afford everything. But VCA cannot make pet ownership cost nothing. Every animal deserves a home that's ready for the commitment. 🐾

🐱 THEY'RE GETTING BIGGER, BUT THEY'RE STILL A PACKAGE DEAL! 🐱

Remember Stanley and Helen from our Three's Company litter? Well, these two are now 6 months old, getting bigger by the day, and STILL waiting for their forever home!

Just look at these two! They're quite the pair, and that picture pretty much says it all. They have personality, they have each other, and they've been side-by-side since they were babies.

Helen had a rough patch when she was younger, but with some extra care in foster, she's doing so much better. And her brother Stanley? He never left her side. He's been her buddy, her comfort, and her constant companion through it all.

Now these two are ready for their next chapter, and we want that chapter to begin together.

We know finding one home for two kittens can take a little longer, but some bonds are just too special to break. We want Stanley and Helen to grow up together, grow old together, and fill someone's home with twice the love and twice the entertainment.

Remember the Ropers? These two are hoping to find their own forever sitcom, starring them!

😾 NATIONAL GROUCH DAY: MEET THE VCA DEPARTMENT OF MISERY 😾

You know how some cats are affectionate, loving, cuddly little purr machines?

Yeah. These aren't those cats.

Today, in honor of National Grouch Day, we'd like to introduce you to three of our residents who have made it their personal mission to remind us that we are NOT the reason they get out of bed in the morning. 😂

🖤 TIMBER — Director of Complaints

That's Timber in the front. The magnificent, long-haired black cat who looks like he's already disappointed in you.

Timber was adopted with his sister by someone we thought was going to give them a home for life. Turns out, that didn't happen, and Timber is back with us. And when I say back with us.....it was certainly not voluntarily "back with us".

He also has urinary tract issues and needs special food. And because he hangs out with a group of other cats, they ALL eat special food now.

So, in addition to everything else we do around here, Timber has apparently appointed himself head of the dietary committee. One cat has a medical issue, and suddenly the whole neighborhood is on a prescription-style menu.

Thanks, Timber. Your fellow cats would like to discuss the budget with you.

😼 PINBALL — Head of Human Avoidance

Pinball is the Siamese beauty lounging in the back. Beautiful? Absolutely. Social? Let's not get carried away.

Pinball allows us to be in the same room with her, provided we understand our place in the universe.

We may clean her litter box. We may bring her food and water. We may provide fresh bedding.

What we may NOT do is approach her with any ridiculous ideas about friendship, affection, or physical contact.

Pinball doesn't want to be petted. She doesn't want to be held. She doesn't want to hear about your day.

She wants room service, fresh accommodations, and for the help to leave promptly after completing its duties.

Honestly, Pinball was ALL ABOUT COVID. She was social distancing before it was trendy. Six feet? Amateur. Pinball would prefer six acres.

If she could put a sign on her door saying, “Do Not Disturb — I Don't Like You,” she absolutely would.

🙄 DELILAH — Chief Executive Officer of NOPE

And then there's Delilah.

We attempted to get a photo of her for National Grouch Day.

She refused to come out.

Let that sink in. We were trying to celebrate her greatest talent, and she couldn't even be bothered to show up for the event.

We suspect she considers the entire holiday beneath her.

Frankly, the fact that she refused to participate may be the most impressive grouch behavior of all. She's earned her title without even appearing in the picture.

🏆 THE VCA GROUCHES

Here's the thing about shelter life: Not every cat is a cuddly sweetheart who wants to be your best friend. Some want absolutely nothing to do with humans beyond the basic necessities.

And that's okay.

These three have a roof over their heads, full food bowls, clean litter boxes, fresh bedding, and staff who have accepted that this is a strictly professional relationship.

We don't take their attitudes personally.

Well… not every day.

We provide the service. They provide the judgment.

We work here. They live here. And apparently, we're all on probation. 😂

Today, Voice for Companion Animals received a very special donation from Payton's Paws, brought to us by Payton's dad, Chad.

In memory of Payton Ackerson, whose life was tragically taken in early September, her family is finding a beautiful way to honor her love for animals by helping those who need it most. ❤️

The generous collection of pet food, beds, blankets, and other supplies will make a real difference for the animals in our care. And as you can see, Sasha was more than happy to help us show off one of the new beds! 🐾

Chad, thank you for thinking of Voice for Companion Animals and for taking the time to bring these wonderful donations to us. We are deeply grateful to be included in this special effort to carry Payton's love for animals forward.

To Payton's family: we hope you know that her love is making a difference. Every meal served, every cozy place to rest, and every animal given a little extra comfort is another way her memory continues to touch lives.

Forever loved. Forever remembered. And her love for animals lives on. 💗🐾

❤️ 🐾 Samson’s Story ❤️ 🐾

Back in November of 2018, Voice for Companion Animals received a call about a veteran named Ron and his dog, Samson.

They were living without electricity or running water. Ron would not leave his best friend behind, and finding somewhere they could go and stay together was difficult.

The VA eventually found them a place where they could stay together, and VCA began helping with food, supplies and veterinary care for Samson.

Over the years, we continued to check in on them. If Samson needed vaccines, we helped. If he needed food, we delivered it. If he needed veterinary care, we helped with that, too.

Ron rarely wanted to ask for much for himself. But when Samson needed something, he would reach out. And every time we saw them together, it was obvious that Samson wasn't simply Ron's dog. He was his best friend. His companion. His constant.

But we didn't know the beginning of their story. Until recently.

Ron told us how he met Samson.

Years ago, Ron was living in a tent along the Republican River. He was in a very dark place. He was thinking about ending his life. Then he heard something behind him. A rustling. When he turned around, there was a little puppy.

Ron picked him up and started walking around, trying to find out where the puppy belonged. He looked for someone who might be missing him. There was no one. So Ron kept him. And named him Samson.

That little puppy who appeared behind him that day became his best friend. And according to Ron, Samson saved his life.

For over eight years, they did life together. Through the difficult days. Through the good days. Through whatever came next. Samson was there. And Ron was there for Samson.

That is what makes what happened so incredibly difficult.

A few weeks ago, we received a call. Samson wasn't eating. He wasn't acting like himself.
We told Ron to get him to the veterinarian as soon as possible and assured him that VCA's Happy Tails program would take care of the visit.

The diagnosis was devastating. Samson had advanced lung cancer. There wasn't much time left.

Ron picked Samson up from the veterinary clinic, and they went home together. They were going to try medication to give Samson a little more quality time.
But just a few days later, Ron called. It was time.

I picked up Ron and Samson, and we went to the veterinarian together. Samson went peacefully.

The little puppy who had appeared behind a man along the Republican River so many years ago had spent over eight years beside him.

Ron once picked Samson up and refused to leave him behind.

And somehow, that little dog returned the favor in the biggest way possible.
He saved Ron's life.

On a cloudy, overcast Friday, Ron had to say goodbye to the dog who had been his best friend, his constant companion and his lifeline.

Some animals are pets.
Some are companions.
And some become a part of the very reason their person is still here.

Samson was that dog.

Run free, sweet boy.
You did your job.
You loved your person.
You stayed.
And you saved a life.

Rest peacefully, Samson. ❤️🐾

Her truck-driving dad has a long weekend, so naturally, Kira gets one, too!

🐿️ Squirrel watching (and maybe a little hunting!)
☕ A morning coffee run — because apparently, somebody has to supervise the coffee line!

Kelli shared these snapshots of their adventures, and we just couldn't resist sharing them, too.

Kira may have found her forever home and a life full of adventures, but she hasn't forgotten her friends at VCA. And the bond she shares with Kelli is still going strong.

THIS is what rescue is all about. Finding the right home, building a beautiful life, and keeping those special friendships along the way.
