This is the 16th video in the Hidden Behaviors of Loneliness — and What We Can Do to Help People Reconnect — series: They Always Seem Busy

Do you know someone who always seems too busy to join in — even for the simplest things?
Ever hear a silly excuse and wonder if something deeper might be going on?

Sometimes “busyness” isn’t a full schedule — it’s a shield.
A way to avoid invitations, avoid vulnerability, and avoid feeling left out again.

This is the 14th video in the Hidden Behaviors of Loneliness—and What We Can Do to Help People Reconnect—series: They Don’t Ask for Help

It can look like pride.
Or independence.
But sometimes, it’s loneliness—disguised as silence.

This is the 13th video in the Hidden Behaviors of Loneliness series.

Sometimes it looks like someone’s lost interest.

They stop reaching out.
They wait for others to decide.
They say, “Whatever you want.”

It can seem like they don’t care.

But often, what’s underneath is disconnection.
Withdrawing can feel safer than being let down again—especially for those already feeling overlooked.

It’s not indifference.
It’s loneliness, taking a quieter shape.

12th video in the Hidden Behaviors of Loneliness series
They downplay their wins.
They can’t accept praise.
They brush off success.

It’s not modesty. It’s disconnection.
Loneliness alters self-worth — and dims the joy of achievement.

This is the 11th video in the Hidden Behaviors of Loneliness series.
They Struggle to Decide.

We often think indecision means someone is flaky or unmotivated.
But loneliness disrupts the brain’s executive function — making even small decisions feel overwhelming.

This is the 10th video in the Hidden Behaviors of Loneliness series.

They stop reaching out.
No calls, no texts, no “Want to grab coffee?”

We assume they’ve pulled away. But science tells a different story.
Loneliness distorts self-perception. People underestimate how much others like them — a phenomenon known as the liking gap.

The result?
They don’t reach out… not because they don’t want connection, but because they’re convinced you don’t want them.

It’s a quiet spiral. And it’s fixable.

This is the ninth video in the Hidden Behaviors of Loneliness series.

They avoid eye contact.

It’s easy to misread: we assume they’re uninterested or shutting down. But research shows that emotional processing takes a hit when people are chronically lonely — making something as simple as a glance feel like too much.

When we see avoidance, we often step back.
But sometimes, it’s a call for connection.

They Get Defensive
This is the 8th video in our Hidden Behaviors of Loneliness series.

They overreact. Get snappy. Take things personally.
We assume they’re rude or difficult.
But science shows loneliness changes how the brain processes threat — especially in social situations.
It puts people on high alert, even when no harm is meant.

Defensiveness might not be about attitude.
It might be about emotional survival.
