🏰 THIS WEEK’S LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: CURWOOD CASTLE IN OWOSSO

Did you know one of Mid-Michigan’s most recognizable historic landmarks was originally built as a writer’s private studio?

Set along the Shiawassee River in Owosso, Curwood Castle was completed in 1923 for bestselling author, adventurer and conservationist James Oliver Curwood. From the castle’s tower, Curwood worked on several of his later stories while overlooking the river and the community he called home.
Today, the castle is preserved as a museum and remains one of the places that gives Owosso such a distinctive sense of history.

If you enjoy discovering the stories behind Mid-Michigan’s communities, this is one worth knowing.

🏛️ THIS WEEK'S MID-MICHIGAN LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: BREWERY BECKER

Some places don't just belong to a community — they help tell its story.

This week we're heading to downtown Brighton in Livingston County to spotlight Brewery Becker, located inside the historic Western House, a landmark dating back to 1873.

After an extensive restoration that preserved much of the building's historic character, Brewery Becker opened here in 2014. Today, the space combines more than 150 years of Brighton history with locally crafted brews, a distinctive taproom and a year-round Biergarten.

It's exactly the kind of locally rooted destination that makes exploring Mid-Michigan so interesting.

🥩 MORE THAN A MID-MICHIGAN FAVORITE—BIG JOHN’S HAS A BIG HEART

For more than 50 years, Big John Steak & Onion has been serving up a true taste of Mid-Michigan—freshly grilled ribeye steak, onions and that unmistakable local flavor generations have grown up enjoying.

But this Flint-area tradition is about more than its famous steak sandwiches. Big John recently donated $25,000 to help families displaced by the Crystal Lake Apartments fire, demonstrating the kind of community spirit that makes locally rooted businesses so special.

From its original Flint roots to locations throughout the region, Big John has become part of the fabric of Mid-Michigan life—one memorable sandwich and one generous act at a time. The Grand Blanc restaurant is located at 252 Perry Road.
