Saturday, October 3rd — Community Chess Tournament (Unrated) ♟️
When & Where: 9am - 1pm at the Highrock Covenant Church - Arlington Loft

Whether you're picking up a chess piece for the first time or you've been competing for years, you're invited to a morning of strategy, friendly competition, and community - open to anyone and everyone across Greater Boston who wants to give it a shot.

This first-ever tournament will be unrated, keeping the focus on fun and getting as many people playing as possible. (We may add a rated division down the road, but for now, it's all about the game - and the community around it.)

Between rounds, gather in The Mill Cafe to grab a bite, review games, and meet fellow chess enthusiasts - and yes, there will be a giant chess set to test out with your family and friends!

Not playing in the tournament, or brand new to the game? Head over to the Skittles Room, where Dr. Jason Shuster and National Masters Elliott Neff, Scott Low, and Kavyashree Mallanna will be offering casual chess lessons and sharing stories, photos, and videos from their trips to Uganda.

Hosted by Sports Outreach and Chess4Life at Highrock, this tournament is about more than finding the best move on the board. It's a chance to connect with players from across Greater Boston while celebrating the way chess builds friendships, mentors young people, and creates opportunities for hope around the world.

Friday, October 2nd — Queen of Katwe Movie Night 🍿
When & Where: 6pm - 9pm in the Sanctuary/Auditorium at Highrock Arlington

Grab your family and friends for a movie night at the Highrock auditorium featuring Disney's Queen of Katwe, the inspiring true story of a young Ugandan girl whose life is transformed through the unlikely world of competitive chess. Whether you love chess or don't know a rook from a bishop, this is a story for all ages about family, perseverance, community, and discovering what's possible when someone believes in you.

Come hungry, too!
→ The Mill Café is hosting a community dinner beforehand starting at 4:30pm — grab a bite, catch up with friends, then head into the auditorium as the film starts at 6:15pm.

More than just the movie.
→ We'll be joined by many invited chess experts, including several National Masters (NM) in Chess: Elliott Neff, Lawyer Times, and Scott Low. Chess enthusiast Dr. Jason Shuster and USCF Chess Expert Kavyashree Mallanna will also be joining us.

Already seen the movie? Come anyway. Throughout the evening, Elliott, Scott, Lawyer, Jason, and Kavya will all be in the Mill Café space offering informal chess lessons for beginners and setting up puzzles to challenge experts. Jason and Scott will also share their own stories, photos, and videos from trips to Uganda - the real place behind the film. This isn't just a movie night; it's a chance to connect with the story behind the story, whether or not you've watched it before.

→ Come for a great movie, meet some special guests, and enjoy a memorable evening together!

🌱 Planting seeds of faith daily 🌱
In Brazil, one of our soccer academy players recently had emergency surgery. He shared with our staff leader, Rose, that He didn’t feel upset or anxious as he went in for surgery - he felt calm because He remembered what he learned at training that God is always with Him and God loves him!

Twice a week, young boys and girls train on the soccer field in Taboao da Serra community in São Paulo. Twice a week they heard the word of God, are prayed over and grow more in their understanding of who God is and how much He loves them. That is sports ministry in action…small seeds planted everyday that with consistent watering become fruit!

In India, the months of June, July, and August see lots of rain. 🌧️ For the past couple of years, this meant Coach Muan had to cancel or postpone soccer training when the fields were too wet and soggy. THIS year was different!

Thanks to gifts from the Sports Outreach family to our sports initiative, we rented turf space at a local field. THIS year, 40+ kids trained in the sport they love, heard the Gospel, and experienced the community of a team! ⚽️
