We held a Blow Bubbles Not Smoke event at our Site-Based after school programs in Mifflin and Juniata County. A total of 22 elementary children (our Littles) and their high school age mentors (our Bigs) attended these events.
BBBS staff introduced Kick Butts Day and Case Manager Stephanie Prough provided information that will help them stay away from to***co and never start smoking or chewing. They reviewed what they learned from the previous TRU event; what are some of the bad things that smoking does to your body?
We asked the group if they had ever heard of second hand smoke and explained what this is. We talked about how smoke can be dangerous and harm your body even if you aren’t the one smoking. We had the following information attached to a bottle of bubbles:
Secondhand smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds are toxic and about 70 can cause cancer. BLOW BUBBLES NOT SMOKE and help protect your child from: ASTHMA, WHEEZING, COUGHING, STUFFY NOSE, HEADACHES, EYE IRRITATION, SORE THROATS, EAR INFECTIONS, PNEUMONIA.
This information was shared with the kids and we told them that they each had a bottle of bubbles to take home and encouraged them to share the attached info with their parents. A larger version of this information was printed on a table tent that was put by the parent sign out sheet so that it was visible for parents. The children were then invited to come outside and “Blow Bubbles Not Smoke”. Here are a few pictures of our kids having fun with the bubbles:
