Family of Young Boy Battling Rare Life-Threatening Disease Asks Hispanic Community to Join Be the Match Registry
Six year old Alfredo Diaz.spent the first three years of his life in and out of the hospital while doctors tried to determine what was causing his failure to thrive and severe gastrointestinal issues. He was finally diagnosed with IL-10 Receptor Deficiency, a disorder so rare, there are very few cases in the world.
Alfredo’s only hope for a cure is a blood stem cell transplant from a compatible donor. He currently does not have any matches in his family or on the registry. His immune system is working overtime attacking everything in his body, causing him to struggle with quality of life. He is on immunosuppressive medication to try to help with this. Yet despite his suffering, his spirit and passion make him a true miracle.
Hispanic patients like 6-year old Alfredo Diaz only have a 46% chance of finding a fully matched donor on the world’s largest and most diverse blood stem cell donor registry.
