Justification by Faith Alone.
That statement can definitely stir up some discussion.
Paul teaches this in the following scriptures:
Romans 3:28: "For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law."
Ephesians 2:8–9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."
Galatians 2:16: "Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ.”
Martin Luther wrote that Christianity hangs on this doctrine.
Without faith Christianity ceases to exist.
Faith is an action, not just a word to say and then sit back on your hands and do nothing.
See some people say that since Paul teaches this and James teaches that it's by works.
James 2:24
You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
So now it looks like we have some kind of contradiction in scripture.
So how do we reconcile this?
Remember how I said faith is an action word.
Let's look at it this way.
First off you can only be justified as righteous before God through Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection.
If you don't have faith in who God is , the God of the Bible, or faith in the truth of who Jesus is. That God is righteous, holy, and just. And because God is those things and we are not there had to be an atonement for us to be reconciled to God so that we could enter into a perfect relationship with Him. Jesus is the perfect sacrifice. He paid the price once and for all.
Now that we put our faith into Jesus and His work on the cross and resurrection our faith must be reflected by our works. Not works of our own but by the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit that dwells in us.
So yes faith without works is dead.
But it isn't the works that saves, we do works because we are saved.
It's putting our faith to work.
Join me this coming Monday morning on No Boundaries Cowboy Church page for more conversations about how works is evidence of faith.
Have a blessed weekend. Hope to see you at church Sunday morning at 10:30.
