There's so much going on at the Rockville Science Center this fall! Elementary and middle school students can choose from afterschool, homeschool or Saturday programs, as well as our very popular "School's Out" full day program covering a variety of exciting STEM topics. For our youngest learners (ages 4-6), we offer play-based learning designed to provide a positive introduction to STEM. Even teens and adults have some great options...be sure to check out our new CubeSat Simulator Project, which will provide a fabulous opportunity for just five middle and high school students to build, program, and test our model, as well as perform some real life applications.

Got plans this weekend? The Rockville Science Center has a fun Family Robotics Night planned for Saturday, October 3, 5:00 - 7:00 PM. It's a great opportunity to learn alongside your child or a friend as you build and operate a LEGO Mindstorms robot before putting it to the test in the Sumo Ring for a battle of the bots!

Kids, if you can imagine it, we can help you take it to the next level! Bring us your zaniest, most creative ideas for a character and we'll show you how to utilize Blender 3D to draw, model, and 3D print it in this exciting, 4-part hands-on class for ages 8-13. The course consists of 4 classes (Thursdays 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, and 10/29) and takes place at the Rockville Makerspace and Tool Library in Rockville Town Square (33F Maryland Ave).

Fall at the Rockville Science Center is off to an fabulous start with a full array of afterschool and homeschool programs underway! But did you know that we also have Saturday STEM programs for all ages taking place this fall? Each Saturday, we are offering Jr. Scientists (ages 4-6) from 1:15 - 2:00 PM, kids programs (ages 7-12) from 2:30 - 4:30 PM, and teen/adult programs from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. These Saturday classes are an opportunity to try something new and add a little hands-on learning to your (or your child's) weekend. Our Numberphiles math club is back at it after taking a short break for summer! If you love math, this is the place for you. We are excited to learn more this month about "Math of the Square-Wheeled Bike." Join us as we explore whether a bike with square wheels can ride smoothly. The Exploratorium in San Francisco and The National Museum of Mathematics in New York City both have exhibits demonstrating that, given the appropriate road, this is indeed possible. We will show a scale model, explore the math involved and how it entails an unusual shape called a catenary. Some calculus will be helpful but not necessary.

Presenter Jim Rudert has a PhD in biomedical engineering and retired in 2020 from the University of Iowa's Orthopedic Biomechanics Research Lab. The Rockville Numberphiles is a math club for mathematicians from middle school to adult. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

All are invited to join us for this month's Science Cafe talk. Author (and President Emeritus of the National Museum of Language) Greg Nedved will give a presentation on the foreign language skills of our US presidents. This presentation, filled with wonderful and never heard stories about our presidents, may change the way you look at our past leaders.

Greg spent much of his professional career (military and government) working with the Chinese language in various capacities, e.g., analyst, translator, instructor. From 2011-2024, he served as the China subject matter expert for the Center for Cryptologic History. His latest book is "Presidential Foreign Language Trivia."

Hey homeschool families! The Rockville Science Center has three different STEM classes just for homeschoolers starting up next week and we'd love for you to join us. Each class meets once a week for 5 weeks from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. Our classes are small and the focus is on hands-on learning.

Here's what you'll be doing in each of the three programs: 1) Extracting DNA from fruit and learning about the human brain as part of our Science Explorers program. 2) Learning about Arduinos and building and programming an autonomous car that you can take home with our Tech Wizards class. 3) Diving into the exciting world of robotics as you build, program and operate a LEGO Mindstorms robot with different sensors. The Rockville Science Center is excited to offer our new "School's Out!" STEM programs this fall for children ages 7-12. Bring a bagged lunch and join us on select MCPS holidays from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. September's program is all about Maker projects and offers a great introduction to 3D printing. Then, in October, we'll learn how to think like engineers as we design, build, test, and revise two different projects. Come explore with us this fall!

The Rockville Science Center's Jr. Scientist program for children ages 4-6 is growing and we couldn't be more excited to introduce the exciting world of STEM to our youngest learners! Join us on Saturdays, 1:15 - 2:00 PM, for one or more of our fun lineup of classes planned for this fall. All classes will be held at our temporary location at 130 Rollins Ave, Suite F-2, Rockville, MD 20852. Parking is plentiful and free! Parents are welcome to drop their child off or stay and join the fun (no extra charge).
