This month marks 35 years since the ADA became law, a milestone in the fight for access and equity.

To reflect on what’s next, CSD Chief Executive Chris Soukup sat down with CurbCuts to talk about leadership, disability pride, and why it’s time to challenge the way society views disability.

Hello all,

Deaf Wings, a program of DeafHope would like to share an important update.

Because of funding changes, the Deaf Wings position has been closed. We are grateful for Brandie's many years of service, starting as a founder, volunteer, and later as an advocate for Deaf survivors in Illinois. We wish her all the best.

Now, what does this mean? Deaf Wings is still a part of DeafHope and our pod community.

If you or someone you know is experiencing violence, DeafHope is here to help. Please reach out to us: [email protected]; text: 510-403-1464; VP/phone: 510-735-8553. Thank you.

Transcript: Hello! We are aware that lately has been scary times for us all including for immigrants. Our goal for this vlog is to help educate you about your rights if you get approached by a government agent. Here are some tips for how you can protect yourself and get help.

Memorize the phone number of a trusted lawyer or legal organization
Have an emergency plan for your family
Know the contact information for your country's consulate
Consider carrying a "Know Your Rights" card in your language

Be sure to always have your IDs and documents such as copies of papers proving your legal immigration status with you at all times.

If ICE, Border Patrol, or Homeland Security agents show up at your home – don’t open the door. Remain calm. Don’t sign any documents. You do not have to give them permission to search your clothes, bag, car, or home. You can use the words, “I do not consent to a search.” You can also use the words, “I know my rights. I do not have to answer your questions.”

If they pull you over in your car, you have the right to ask them for their IDs as well. If it’s not crime related they can’t search your car either.

If they stop you in the street or inside a building, you can ask them if you are being detained. If they say no, you are free to go.

If they arrest you, demand a lawyer immediately. You have the right to contact an attorney.

Take photos and videos for evidence if able – do remember the details of your encounter. Always try your best to remain calm, be polite and don't interfere along with don’t lie or give any false documents.

Regardless of immigration or citizenship status you have constitutional rights. We are here to support you and you are not alone.
