Our Theme of the Month in September is an important one for all of us, but particularly for those of us in the serving professions: Mental Health Literacy.

One of the ways we'll explore this is at our monthly Best of Texas spotlight. Together with our guests, weโ€™ll explore mental health through reflection, conversation, and practical strategy-building. Weโ€™ll examine the signs and symptoms of stress and burnout, discuss how mental health literacy can improve self-awareness, and identify realistic ways to support personal and professional well-being in demanding roles.

Texas literacy in the news -

"The Kilgore Public Library received a $10,000 Slice of Literary Grant from the Pizza Hut Foundation.

It recognized the Friends of the Kilgore Public Library's commitment to promoting literacy and empowering people in their local community. The grant supports the Pizza Hut Foundation's goal to expand the Pizza Hut Book It! reading program through further literacy-focused initiatives."

Congratulations!! ๐ŸŒŸ

The East Texas Literacy Symposium is on a Thursday this year - you told us loud and clear to avoid weekends! - and it's coming up soon! We're just about a month out, and we're getting the program together now.

Highlights of Literacy Texas regional symposia:
๐ŸŒŸ Robust breakout sessions, some led by the stellar trainers from TCALL, some by Literacy Texas, and others by local experts
๐ŸŒŸ Dedicated networking time (this is another thing you consistently tell us you want, so here it is in the program!)
๐ŸŒŸ Opportunities to hear and see the latest from exhibitors
๐ŸŒŸ Lunchtime workforce panel

The workforce panel was the sleeper hit of our 2025-26 grant year - symposium attendees across the state consistently told us that it was a highlight. So it's back for 2026-27 with even a little more time dedicated to it!

Get all the details and reserve your free ticket on the Literacy Texas website: https://www.literacytexas.org/easttx

"Every week, English teachers, tutors, and adult learners gather to practice greetings, laugh at mistakes, and celebrate small victories.

One day, the lesson focuses on the difference between the words leave and live, a pronunciation distinction that may seem like a small thing until one learner shares that people often have trouble understanding her at work. The teacher leads the group through focused practice while drawing the groupโ€™s attention to strategies that help them distinguish the two vowel sounds.

The following week, the learner returns with a smile..."

Mental Health Literacy is one of the most important topics we can talk about.

Our September Best of Texas spotlight will focus on mental health literacy and burnout. Weโ€™ll pay particular attention to recognizing signs of stress and burnout, strengthening mental health awareness, and sharing practical strategies for resilience and well-being.

We plan to cover any and all of the following, time permitting:
๐Ÿ’› Understanding mental health literacy and why it matters.
๐Ÿ’› Recognizing early signs of burnout, compassion fatigue, and chronic stress.
๐Ÿ’› Identifying barriers to seeking support and reducing stigma.
๐Ÿ’› Exploring individual and organizational strategies for resilience and recovery.
๐Ÿ’› Sharing practical approaches to well-being in education, healthcare, and community settings.
