Brace yourself… because everything you thought you knew about Saint Patrick’s Day might be wrong. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but the truth about ol’ Patrick has been twisted over the centuries, and there are a lot of myths out there… Here are some of the biggest misconceptions (and why they're wrong).

1. Patrick is Ireland’s patron saint – but he wasn’t Irish.

Surprising, right? Patrick was actually born in Britain to a wealthy family. He only ended up in Ireland because he was (allegedly) kidnapped by pirates and taken there against his will. Not exactly a vacation.

2. His name wasn’t even Patrick!

No joke. He was born Maewyn Succat and only later adopted the name “Patrick” (from the Latin Patricius, meaning “father figure”) when he became ordained. It’s the same reason popes take on new names today.

3. He didn’t wear green

Turns out, Patrick’s favorite color was blue – or so the historians say. The association with green came much later, when the shade became a symbol of Irish nationalism.

4. He didn’t drive any snakes out of Ireland

This one’s easy to debunk: there were never any snakes in Ireland to begin with! So, what are the "snakes" we're talking about? Most historians believe the legend stems from an unsavory act of symbolism – a derogatory reference to Ireland's pagan population and Patrick’s efforts to convert them to Christianity.

5. Saint Patrick… wasn’t technically a saint

At least, not officially. He was never canonized by the Pope because there wasn’t a formal process for sainthood back then. But his popularity made the title stick, and today, he’s widely recognized as a saint anyway.

So if you’re celebrating today – whether in green or blue – test your friends' knowledge with a couple of these myth-busting facts. And maybe buy a pagan a drink if you get the chance!

We’ve established five causes relative to our L.I.F.E. mission to help human communities eliminate ideological limitations and provide environments of freedom for all people.

One of those causes is to help insure the continuation of the arts in all forms by supporting individuals, groups, venues and training situations assist individuals with overcoming resource related barriers.

A persistant common misconception is that people from low-income backgrounds are not interested in art. Research shows that this is far from the truth because many from underprivileged communities do appreciate and engage with art but there are several systemic barriers that often limit their access and opportunities to fully participate in the art world.

This article will explore these barriers and discuss how they impact the engagement of low-income individuals with art.

A 2017 National Endowment of The Arts Survey found there were 4 major barriers to Arts Participation.

- Time (73%)
- Cost (38%)
- Access (37%)
- No one to go with (22%)

The Festival Friends Charitable helps provide necessary resources to address each of them by providing resources for tickets, equipment, supplies and transportation.

Donate today via the link in the Bio and help us get people and keep people involved in local arts!

We’ve established five causes relative to our L.I.F.E. mission to help human communities eliminate ideological limitations

One of those causes is to assist individuals and their families with expenses associated with cancer treatments.

Approximately 40% of men and women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetimes (Source: ) and cancer causes significant loss of income for patients and their families, with an estimated 42% of cancer patients 50 or older depleting their life savings within two years of diagnosis. (Source: ).

The My Friend Phil Charitable Fund for Cancer Treatment Assistance has been established in honor of our founder’s best friend and college roommate Philip Makowski who lost his battle with the cancer 8 years ago to help provide necessary resources to those affected by the disease.

Donate today and help us beat cancer!

Our Founder and Executive Director Brian N. Hewlett
recently had the pleasure of attending the marriage of Stephanie Makowski, the daughter of Phil Makowski for whom the new My Friend Phil Charitable Fund for Cancer Assistance is named, to Thomas Brown on Friday December 6, 2024.

While there he met with Phil’s entire family including his widow Judy Makowski and sons Patrick Makowski and Shane Makowski and was able to announce both the establishment of the Fund and creation of a $1,000 Grant from the Fund that will be awarded in honor of the bride and groom.

Congratulations and Best Wishes for a bright future!
