DKMM HHW collections will resume in April 2027. Other safe disposal options are available outside of the DKMM collection season, but these are not provided through our solid waste district.

LAST CALL for HHW! ☠️

Not every pest needs a pesticide. At our adopted flower bed, we’re letting the natural ecosystem help manage aphids on our swamp milkweed—providing food for beneficial insects rather than reaching for a chemical.

There is a time and place for herbicides, especially when managing invasive plants. The goal is to use chemicals thoughtfully and only when needed.

And when you have leftover household chemicals, dispose of them properly through a Household Hazardous Waste collection—never dump them down the drain or on the ground.

Keep electronics out of the trash and recycling! Some contain batteries that can cause severe fires when crushed or damaged.

An Unexpected Moment 🦋

I was in a hurry yesterday, trying to beat the rain and reserve a space at a local downtown shop for an upcoming meeting.

But in the midst of hurrying back, I noticed something fluttering around. I stopped. I waited. For a moment, I thought it was going to simply flutter away.

Instead, it landed on one of the planters downtown.

And sure enough… a beautiful monarch. 🦋

A little reminder that sometimes, even when we’re in a hurry, it’s worth stopping to notice what’s right in front of us.

Marion is beautiful. ❤️

What do I do with batteries?

⚠️ Keep batteries out of the trash and recycling! They can cause severe fires when damaged or crushed. 🔥

🔋 Lowe’s accepts: Rechargeable, button/cell, NiCd, NiMH, and single-use lithium-ion batteries.

♻️ DKMM accepts ALL household batteries at HHW collections. Appointments end in September, so reserve your spot today! Call 419-751-2290. Battery-only loads are FREE!

🛡️ Before drop-off: Tape both terminals with non-conductive tape or individually bag each battery.

🚫 Never leave batteries at recycling drop-off sites.

♻️ WDIDW Wednesday: Paint Cans? 🎨

What do I do with leftover paint? Here’s what to do:

✅ Latex paint: Small amounts can be dried out completely (try mixing in cat litter or a paint hardener), then with the lid removed, place it in the trash.

⚠️ Oil-based paint, stains, and solvents: These are considered household hazardous waste (HHW). Bring them to a DKMM HHW collection event. Call 419-751-2290 to schedule an appointment (available through September).

🎨 Still usable? Consider donating it, or check with Wilhelms Paints & Wallcoverings LLC to see if your paint qualifies for their paint recycling program.

🚫 Please never leave paint cans or other HHW materials at county recycling drop-off sites. These locations are only for accepted recyclables, and leaving unwanted items is considered illegal dumping. DKMM funds these sites to provide a free recycling option for residents without curbside service—thank you for helping keep them clean and using the right disposal options!
